HOT WORDS VOCABULARY 9 th GRADE LESSON 15

1. furtive (adj.) done quickly and secretly to avoid being noticed. With a furtive glance over his shoulder, the burglar slipped into the building when the guard wasn’t looking.

2 . galvanize (v.) to shock into action.   It took a nuclear accident at Chernobl to galvanize the world into working on an arms agreement.

3 . garbled (adj.) confused; mixed up. The garbled message caused the ambulance to go to the wrong address.

4. garner (v.) to gather and store away; to collect. Just like a squirrel, I plan to garner my resources so I will be comfortable when I retire.

5 . garrulous (adj.) talkative The security guard was so garrulous that we missed our flight while she finished her story.

6 . gratuitous (adj.) freely given; unnecessary. My mother-in-law tends to give gratuitous advice about how to raise the kids, but it’s usually outdated.

7. guile (n.) crafty deceit; cunning Despite a villain’s guile in plotting a crime, the hero always manages to save the day.

8 . gullible (adj.) easily deceived. -The con man told outrageous lies, but the gullible investors believed every word.

9 . hackneyed (adj.) used too often; commonplace.   -John’s eulogy was well-received, but it was full of hackneyed expressions that we have all heard before.

10 . haphazard (adj.) not planned; random.   Startled by the sudden appearance of the deer, the hunter took haphazard aim and accidentally shot another hunter.
