1 The rst of the three ships,
The rst of the three ships, the MV Ta’ Pinu , is expected to operate between Malta and Gozo within three months Open Day is being held today on Ta’ Pinu Ferry... To increase accessibility between the islands, the Gozo Channel Line Company embarked on an ambitious project of constructing three new passenger ferries within three years. The project has been entrusted to the Malta Ship Building. Those who will be visiting the MV Ta’ Pinu today, will certainly notice the evident upgrade in service that this ship will be oering, once in operation as part of the Gozo Channel’s eet. Since the setting up of the Company in 1979, this is the rst time in its history that new its own requirements and criteria. The newly Ta’ Pinu vessel has a carrying capacity of 900 passengers and 72 vehicles in the deck. The overall design of these ships will include accessibility for disabled persons and the elderly. It is anticipated that the second ship, the MV Gaudos , will be ready by 2001 and the MV Malita by 2002. The latter will have a hoistable deck for 66 additional vehicles. It is estimated that the cost of the whole investment will be around LM33 million. Once ready, the three new vessels will be replacing the existing eet. 13 December 1999 HISTORY SNIPPETS BY Courtesy: National Archives (Gozo Section)
