ACTION PACKED SCENARIO - NARR I.Generally only five to eight cars are loaded in a single string. A portable ramp is rolled up to the end of the string. At some auto facilities, there are fixed ramps at the ends of tracks (but this is less common). The ramp levels are either fixed (for tri-levels or bi-levels) or can be adjusted hydraulically. the doors are opened and folding deck plates are laid down between the cars. 24-09-2016AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA

ACTION PACKED SCENARIO NARR II.Then a highly paid skilled driver with nerves strung like a piano wire runs to the auto, starts it, revves the gas several times to make sure the tachometer can go past the red line, races around to the ramp, zooms up it, drives to the far end in the string brakes to a halt in a cloud of smoke, wiggles out the end door, runs back to the car park24-09-2016AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA

Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONSi. Early 20th century in boxcars: - Two to four automobiles ii. Susequent modifications : - longer boxcars, -larger sliding double side doors at one end, -doors located on the boxcar ends. 24-09-2016

Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONSi. In 1923, the Grand Trunk Western Railroad: - 61-foot (18.59 m)-long wood-frame flat cars -collapsible frames for double-deck operationii. In 1940s to 1950s: -some railroads developed automobile-loading assemblies - to lift one or more automobiles above other in a boxcar 24-09-2016

Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS i. In U.S., most Circuses traveled by rail ii. Circuses were major haulers of wheeled vehicles: - on flat cars - usually behind their own passenger cars iii. Usually, one train for people - A second train for vehicles / freight iv. The Circus solution to loading vehicles:
-used a string of flatcars. -
a temp ramp at the end of the flatcars - temp bridge plates over the gaps bet flatcars
Vehicles were driven or towed up onto one car and
then over the train

Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONSA major problem: - protection from theft, vandalism, severe weatherii. Individual railroads began installing: - mesh side screen / solid panels late 1960s -early 1970s new racks built with side panels. iii. Vandals could still gain access to the automobilesiv. In 1973 ,the first fully enclosed racks with continuous side panels, end doors, and roofs were developed. - But not all
Autoracks until mid -1980s -Bridges and Tunnel clearances?

Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS Trailer Train Company (TTX) ( Business Strategy)Although advantageous ,in the 1960s, most North American railroads were reluctant to invest in specially built equipment. The Trailer Train Company, (Pennsylvania Railroad and the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1955) stepped in to ease the railroads' financial burden a bit. Trailer Train purchased the flat cars from the rail car manufacturers, Railroads purchased the racks Racks were installed flat cars and operated by Railroads

Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS Ensuing SuccessThis arrangement worked so well that nearly every autorack operating in the US was owned by a railroad. Trailer Train became TTX Company in 1991; Since then many railroads have themselves purchased the flat cars on which the racks were installed TTX expanded into purchasing and leasing out other railroad rolling stock. The development of enclosed autoracks also helped make several other innovative services work well.24-09-2016AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA
