Freshwater Tidal Marsh Field: Transcript
Guide As you navigate through a freshwater tidal marsh you will see many plants and animals that interact with each other to form the diverse ecosystem that surrounds you This field guide describes physical characteristics of plants and animals found in freshwater tidal marshes Use the descriptions and drawings to help you identify what you see All plants are native unless marked with an asterisk . BioSc. 413. Spring 2011. Salt Marsh Restoration. Basic Salt Marsh Ecology. Salt marshes occur in intertidal zones of moderate to low energy shorelines. Vegetation consists of various halophytic (salt tolerant) grasses, sedges, and rushes that are periodically flooded by estuarine waters. Role of Animals. Felicia Woods. Role of Animals. Animals are important to the processes occurring in salt marshes, and can be key indicators (or causes) of an unhealthy marsh.. Bioaccumulation of toxins can reduce populations (e.g. DDT interferes with calcium deposition). Acting Today, . Preparing for the Next 100 years. S.C. Adamowicz, Ph.D.; US FWS. B. Our hypothesis was that if there is a change from freshwater to saltwater, then the tidal plant species in each area will differ. The data collected from our experiment helped support our hypothesis. In our findings we saw that in the freshwater location, there was a greater amount of biodiversity and the plants were generally larger. On the other hand, we saw that in the saltwater location, the banks had less biodiversity and consisted with only Phragmites. One explanation for this is for the fact that the abundance of freshwater in the freshwater location allowed for a large variety of large plants to live in this area. However, only a thin layer of freshwater on the surface of the water was present at the saltwater location, which minimized the diversity of plant life that could live in this area. This minimized the competition in this area, allowing it to be overrun by Phragmites plants. . Phone: 07 3207 8327. Fax: 07 3207 8327. Mob: 0421 548 755. ABN: 42 817 153 847.
