Ana-Flo™ UASB Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Presented by: Kirsten Sims and Jon Richens

Overview UASB – Upflow Anaerobic Sludge BlanketTreatment of high strength waste streams Smaller footprint as compared to aerobic treatment.Recovery of biogasIs the “KEY” unit process in the overall solution.

Ongoing Anaerobic Experience

So why now? Industrial Biological Treatment is an untapped market segment for WesTech.Environmental regulations are putting pressure on Industries and Municipalities. We see a growing market and a need. Treatment costsSustainabilityWesTech is working to be the Solution Supplier, not just Equipment Supplier.

WesTech Ana-Flo Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor (UASB) Biological removal of organic contaminants under anaerobic conditions Reactor retains active biomass, while releasing treated effluent and generated biogas Treatment of wastewater with high levels of soluble organics (high BOD or COD)

WesTech Ana-Flo Wastewater is passed upwards through a bed of active anaerobic sludge Soluble organics are degraded and converted to biogas Biogas 60% CH4, 40% CO2 Treated Effluent 60-90% COD Reduction 70-90% BOD Reduction Anaerobic Biosolids Only 5% influent COD becomes sludge High Strength Wastewater

UASB Reactor and Granulation Key to operational performance: Sludge Granulation Granulation allows biomass to settle quickly and form a sludge blanket, allowing continuous flow. Nitrifying De-Nitrifying Aerobic Anaerobic *High Metabolic Activity *High Settleability Methanogenic Anaerobic

How does it work? UASB was a breakthrough in anaerobic technology application De-couples the Solids Retention Time (SRT) from the Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT)

Brief History of UASB Anaerobic treatment has been rapidly developed since the late 1960’s Originally developed by Professor Gatze Lettinga during the 1970’s at Wageningen UniversityChose not to patent to ensure technology was universally available First Installation: Sugar Mill Effluent- 1979 U.S. Anaerobic Treatment Installations :1970-2009

Ana-Flo Applications Breweries and Beverage Distilleries and Fermentation Food Processing Pulp and Paper Chemical and Petrochemical (biological) Textile Industry Effluents Landfill Leachates Palm Oil Dairy Acid Mine Drainage Sulfate reduction coupled to sulfur removal Sulfate reduction coupled to metal recovery Municipal Wastewater (in warmer climates) 90% of UASB installations were in these applications before 1990 Growing interest in UASB applications for these applications Additional UASB applications found in these markets

High-Rate Anaerobic Applications in Industries

Eliminate power requirement for blowers/aerators Anaerobic vs Aerobic Significant reduction in biosolids Produce biogas for heat and electricity potential

Adoption rate of anaerobic technologies is accelerating UASB Market CAGR = Compound Annual Growth Rate

UASB applicable industries Potential Customers

WesTech Ana-Flo UASB Excellent Consistent Performance Low Energy ConsumptionEliminates high power requirement of aerated systems (blowers and aerators)Low Sludge ProductionLow Macro/Micro Nutrient RequirementProduction of Valuable Byproduct (Biogas)Low Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT)Improved Sludge DewaterabilityHandling of organic shock loads Simple Reactor Construction Verified Reactor Performance and Design No mechanical mixing required Advantages Disadvantages Long start-up period Lower performance at very low loadings Low pathogen removal Potential odor Methane gas, Sulfuric Compounds Low nutrient removal Cannot achieve surface water discharge levels without further treatment (aerobic polishing) Challenging in cold climates

Waste streams not directly suitable for UASB treatment Waste streams with insoluble fraction exceeding 60% Upstream fermenter will be required to allow organics to solubilize Waste streams with high levels of TSS (>2,000 mg/L) Pre-treatment will be required (DAF, sedimentation, etc.) Waste streams with constituents requiring oxidization for removal - Fe, Mn, etc. Waste streams with highly variable characteristics - EQ may be required
