Why was there a sino-soviet split?

1945-1976Slide2

Reasons for the Sino-Soviet split

Mao and Stalin were too similar (personality) to get along (created immediate tension between China and USSR)

Chinese were unhappy with the unfriendly treatment by USSR

Many clashes along the Sino Soviet border

7000 km border

Stalin disagree with Mao’s attempt to run a peasants based revolution

“the Chinese must plant their backsides on the soil of China”

Meaning: China must have its own revolution not have outside revolutionaries dictate how China should conduct themselves.

USSR saw themselves as the only true interpreter of communist faith, this

casued

conflictSlide3

Reasons for the Sino-Soviet splitMao disliked Stalin’s personality and the way Chinese were treated when they went to the

USSR

Mao didn't feel he was treated well on his first visit to USSR

It is suspected, Mao and Stalin did not get along therefore Stalin did

n’

t want to spend time which he didn't need to with him.

Khrushchev and Mao did not get along either

Khrushchev's de-Stalinization’s cult of personality was a reflection on

Mao’s

cult of personality

The Sino-Soviet treaty of 1950 was in favor of Stalin

The $300 million from the USSR was a loan (with interest), NOT a giftSlide4

Reasons for the Sino-Soviet split

Mao’s second visit to the USSR

An attempt by

Krushchev

to make peace between USSR and China

Mao made it clear that the USSR’s approach to the west was too accommodating

The Taiwan issue (1958):

Without consulting the USSR he prepared a full scale assault on the nationalist held island. (the attack did not follow through because the USA prepared for war against China)

The USSR did not support China in its threats to attack Taiwan, this caused Khrushchev to withdraw economic advisors from China

Rivalry over Albania:

China gave support to countries in the Eastern-bloc when USSR was undergoing de-

S

talinazation

. This upset the USSRSlide5

Reasons for the Sino-Soviet split

China walking out of the Moscow conference in 1961

PRC had been invited to observe speech by

Krushchev

in the USSR

Krushcheve

had made statements about the backwards

tanlist

ways of

A

lbania

Zhou

Enlai

had predicted this offensive attack on the Chinese, so the entire Chinese delegation exited the hall in a rehearsed manner.

Events of Sino-Soviet Split

1958- Soviet withdraws economic advisors and cancels commercial contracts

1964- Chinese develops A bomb (with shredded documents)

1967- Chinese develops H bomb

I

nternational Communism

PRC and USSR point nuclear rockets at each otherSlide7

Did mao ever seek support from other countries apart from the USSRSlide8

President Nixon:

the People’s Republic of China was here to stay and some sort of working relationship with Beijing was in the interests of the United States

.

He thought that having China on his side would balance the power of the Cold war

The Chinese accepted a

security advisor from USA

(

Henry

Kissinger)Slide9
