The

Cleansing

of

the Church

The Mystery of God

Eph 5:23-27“[Quoting Ephesians 5:27]. The church, enfeebled and defective though it be, is the only object on earth on which Christ bestows His supreme regard. He is constantly watching it with solicitude, and is strengthening it by His Holy Spirit. Will we, as members of His church, allow Him to impress our minds and to work through us to His glory? {SD 13.2}“Christ loves His church…The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the church will eventually be made manifest, even to "the principalities and powers in heavenly places," the final and full display of the love of God.... The church is God's fortress, His city of refuge, which He holds in a revolted world.... It is the theater of His grace, in which He delights to reveal His power to transform hearts. {SD 13.4} Slide4

The

Cleansing

of

the Church

The church is God's appointed agency for the salvation of men. It was organized for service, and its mission is to carry the gospel to the world. From the beginning it has been God's plan that through His church shall be reflected to the world His fullness and His sufficiency. The members of the church, those whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light, are to show forth His glory. The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the church will eventually be made manifest, even to "the principalities and powers in heavenly places," the final and full display of the love of God. Church Militant vs. Church

Triumphant

""Has God no living church? He has a church, but it is the church militant, not the church triumphant.

We are sorry that there are defective members

. . . .While the Lord brings into the church those who are truly converted, Satan at the same time brings persons who are not converted into its fellowship.

While Christ is sowing the good seed, Satan is sowing the tares

. There are two opposing influences continually exerted on the members of the church. One influence is working for the purification of the church, and the other for the corrupting of the people of God. . . . {FLB 305.2} Although there are evils existing in the church, and will be until the end of the world, the church in these last days is to be the light of the world that is polluted and demoralized by sin. . . . {FLB 305.3} Slide6

Church Militant vs. Church

Triumphant

“Let

both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn

.”

-

Matthew 13:30“The work is soon to close. The members of the church militant who have proved faithful will become the church triumphant.-- Letter 32, 1892. {Ev 707.1}“Multitudes will receive the faith and join the armies of the Lord.--Review and Herald, July 23, 1895. {Ev 700.1} Slide7

The

Shaking

“The Lord is soon to come.

There must be a refining, winnowing process in every church

, for there are among us wicked men who do not love the truth or honor God.--RH March 19, 1895. {LDE 173.3}

We are in the shaking time, the time when everything that can be shaken will be shaken

. The Lord will not excuse those who know the truth if they do not in word and deed obey His commands.--6T 332 (1900). {LDE 173.4}“The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to worldly demands and conformed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter to yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprisonment, and death. The contest is between the commandments of God and the commandments of men. In this time the gold will be separated from the dross in the church.--5T 81 (1882). {LDE 173.6} Slide8

Will

God’s

Church

stay

Organized until the end?

Some have advanced the thought that, as we near the close of time, every child of God will act independently of any religious organization. But I have been instructed by the Lord that in this work there is no such thing as every man’s being independent. The stars of heaven are all under law, each influencing the other to do the will of God, yielding their common obedience to the law that controls their action. And, in order that the Lord’s work may advance healthfully and solidly, His people must draw together.” --9T 257, 258 at G.C. of 1909.1SM 42 – Let the testimonies explain themselvesSlide9

“The church is in the

state. The presence of God is not in her midst.--1NL 99 (1898). {LDE 49.1} “The church is in the Laodicean state. The presence of God is not in her midst. If Christ were formed within, the hope of glory, conformity to His image would be seen, and the church trials which separate the members from Christ would disappear. . . . Mission work must not cease because of limited means. {1NL 99}LDE 54 – Statement at next GCSlide10

“Of those who boast of their light and yet fail to walk in it Christ says, "But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for

Tyre

and Sidon at the day of judgment than for you. And thou, Capernaum [Seventh-day Adventists, who have had great light], which art exalted unto heaven [in point of privilege], shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day."--RH Aug. 1, 1893. God is Leading

His

Church!

"God has a church upon the earth, who are his chosen people, who keep his commandments.

He is leading, not stray off-shoots

, not one here and one there, but a people. {RH, September 12, 1893 par. 19}

“God has a distinct people, a church on earth, second to none, but superior to all in their facilities to teach the truth, to vindicate the law of God. . . . My brother, if you are teaching that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is Babylon, you are wrong.--TM 50, 58, 59 (1893).“God has invested His church with special authority and power which no one can be justified in disregarding and despising, for he who does this despises the voice of God. --AA 164 (1911). {LDE 56.2} Slide12

It

will

appear

to fall…

“Satan will work his miracles to deceive; he will set up his power as supreme.

The church may appear as about to fall, but it does not fall. It remains, while the sinners in Zion will be sifted out--the chaff separated from the precious wheat. This is a terrible ordeal, but nevertheless it must take place. None but those who have been overcoming by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony will be found with the loyal and true, without spot or stain of sin, without guile in their mouths.... The remnant that purify their souls by obeying the truth gather strength from the trying process, exhibiting the beauty of holiness amid the surrounding apostasy. I know that the Lord loves His church. It is not to be disorganized or broken up into independent atoms. There is not the least consistency in this; there is not the least evidence that such a thing will be. Those who shall heed this false message and try to leaven others will be deceived and prepared to receive advanced delusions, and they will come to nought….Slide13

It

will

appear

to fall…

I am encouraged and blessed as I realize that the God of Israel is still guiding His people, and that He will continue to be with them, even to the end. We cannot now step off the foundation that God has established. We cannot now enter into any new organization; for this would mean apostasy from the truth. The church, soon to enter upon her most severe conflict, will be the object most dear to God upon earth. The confederacy of evil will be stirred with power from beneath, and Satan will cast all the reproach possible upon the chosen ones whom he cannot deceive and delude with his satanic inventions and falsehoods. But exalted "to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins," will Christ, our representative and head, close His heart, or withdraw His hand, or falsify His promise? No; never, never. {Mar 203} Slide14

The Church

shall

stand

Perfect

The leaders in God's cause, as wise generals, are to lay plans for advance moves all along the line. In their planning they are to give special study to the work that can be done by the laity for their friends and neighbors. The work of God in this earth can never be finished until the men and women comprising our church membership rally to the work and unite their efforts with those of ministers and church officers. {9T 116.4} “I am instructed to say to Seventh-day Adventists the world over, God has called us as a people to be a peculiar treasure unto Himself. He has appointed that His church on earth shall stand perfectly united in the Spirit and counsel of the Lord of hosts to the end of time.--2SM 397 (1908). {LDE 55.3 Slide15

“I TOLD HER [MRS. LIDA SCOTT] HOW MOTHER REGARDED THE EXPERIENCE OF

THE REMNANT CHURCH, AND OF HER POSITIVE TEACHING THAT GOD WOULD NOT PERMIT THIS DENOMINATION TO SO FULLY APOSTATIZE THAT THERE WOULD BE THE COMING OUT OF ANOTHER CHURCH.--W. C. White to E. E. Andross, May 23, 1915, White Estate Correspondence File. {LDE 56.4} Slide16
