MPH (c)- Epidemiology. Background/ Significance. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are major public health issue that affects an estimated 36.5% and 9.3% of the U.S. adult population, respectively(1)(2). Additionally, both excessive body weight and type 2 diabetes are known risk factors for breast and colon cancer (3). Lifestyle factors, such as diet and physical activity levels, increase breast cancer survivors’ risk of developing or worsening comorbid chronic health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (4), and in both breast and colon cancer survivors, such comorbidity is shown to increase all-cause and cancer-specific 5-year mortality.
