Narrative Voice – Titus –

Titus’ voice begins as youthful with a mood of disinterest in the world, presented in the syntax, intermittent stream of conscious style expression and recount of menial events and moments: “Everything at home was boring. Link Arwaker was like, “I’m so null,” and Marty was all, “I’m null too, unit,” but I mean we were all pretty null…”.

 

This evenly paced recount suggests a lack of freedom to be and do something new or out of the ordinary – a foreshadowing for restrictions later implied. But initially, Titus is as disinterested in doing the same old thing as any adolescent from the present day. This common attitude engages us to want further interaction with him.

Our interaction with Titus is somewhat endearing because he shares similar feelings and thoughts to us with an early undercurrent of disillusionment revealed when he talks about seeing the moon: “…the moon was just like it always is, after your first few times there, when you get over being like, 

Whoa, unit! The moon!

 The goddamn moon! And instead there’s just the rockiness, and suckiness, and the craters are all being full of old broken shit…”

 

Anderson also reveals in Titus a human need common to us all, no matter age, gender, race, context – “And it would be good to have someone to download with.” Anderson extends this universal need through music projected down the feed in Utopia:

“’Cause “touching”

Is not just that its touching,

But that we are both touching,

Like with our mouths are touching,

So hold me tight,

Darling,

Hold me tight.

Anderson highlights a need for physical contact, perhaps in this world more than ever. Loneliness is a theme that emerges from this. Anderson writes a recount for Titus to convey to Violet. He chats the recount to her in Utopia as if it is a precious gift: “We played sardines in the closet”… “you know, (when you’re) younger… I kept thinking of the time when you’re all racing around…” it becomes a bit of a metaphor for coming of age, linking back to the prologue when they discover they have lost their naivety and are exposed to the wider

. Loneliness makes us feel vulnerable, and Titus says: “Then you’re walking around alone. You know, there’s this weird moment where you realise that you’re alone” … “You’re walking, and everything’s empty, but the weirdest thing is that it’s not empty at all.” It may be that the feed prevents each individual from feeling lonely. In the end, however, it is Violet’s death that reveals the importance of dynamic and spontaneous human, rather than synthesized, orchestrated contact.
