1 Fieldston School Megan Rogers 1 Maggie Weisblum 1 Serena Zhang 1 Abstract Van Cortlandt Park is a public park located in the North Bronx and is home to 49 known species of fungi Fungi are an essential component of most ecosystems as they help decompose organic matter and can be a source of food for some organisms Additionally certain fungal species can be indicators of environmental conditions such as soil acidity or mineral composition The research question is What characterization of mushroom species be found in Van Cortlandt Park The goal of this research project was to collect data that could provide insight about the types of mushrooms that reside within the park After collecting samples the lab was performed following the bioinformatics protocol provided by UBP Six samples were sent to be tested and three samples had sequencing results showing strong indications of belonging to the
