Cultural note on HALLOWEEN

Halloween takes place on 31st October and is the night when ghosts and spirits are said to wander the earth.

It is a night of superstition and magic. Children and adults often have parties where they dress up as witches and ghosts. In America and Britain it is the custom for children to play “trick or treat”. This means that children visit their neighbours´ homes and ask for some sweets (= a treat). If they are not given any sweets, they might play a trick on the neighbour, such as scattering flour over the doorsteps. A more popular Halloween custom is making a lantern by hollowing out a pumpkin and placing a candle inside.

This is called a “jack o´lantern”. The lantern is placed outside a door or by a window to drive away evil spirits.
