Created in and around Seattle, WA

Characterized by:

Distorted electric guitars

Contrasting song dynamics

“Growling” vocals

Angst-filled lyrics



Themes that were common in Grunge Music included:

Social alienation

Desire for freedom

Apathy (lack of emotions, feelings, or desires)

Disenchantment caused by society/surroundings

Depression about the future

Loathing of “fakeness” in the world

Written by Billie Joe Armstrong after he was diagnosed with social anxiety in 1994

Armstrong described himself as an “outcast” and a “loner” in high school

Green Day still perform and have gained in popularity since “Basket Case”
