Investigating a Collection of Personal Noticeboard Displays in the Workplace

Erroll Wooderroll.wood@cl.cam.ac.uk

Peter Robinsonpeter.robinson@cl.cam.ac.ukSlide2

What are NetBoards?

Situated personal noticeboard displaysSlide3

Environmental context

Deployed over the Graphics & Interaction Group

www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/rainbow/22 members, 13 offices, mostly PhD studentsSlide4

Pre-deployment study

Ubiquitous systems must be carefully designed to minimize the disruption of existing every-day practices

We conducted a study to examine how non-digital noticeboards are usedSlide5

Pre-deployment study

C

ollected 50 images over six monthsSlide6

Pre-deployment study: content creation

Content is created using two methods

InkingPrinting & stickingSlide7

Pre-deployment study: types of content

Content fits into three categories

Notice of absenceHumorPlaySlide8

Motivation

The existing non-digital system is good, but there are some issuesSometimes we want to edit our noticeboard, but we are out-of-officeWe are forgetful, and we leave the same content up for agesSlide9

Prototype deployment

Driven by a Raspberry-PiAncient touch-screen technology interfaceSlide10

Prototype observations

They generated excitement

They weren’t good enoughDependable: users expect them to workEasy to use: users won’t bother if they have to learn muchSlide11

The NetBoards systemSlide12

Web-based architectureSlide13

Modifying content

Each NetBoard can be accessed and edited online

We adopted standard multi-touch interaction techniquesMouse controls are available for desktop useSlide14

Users can enter text status online

These appear in the UI layer

Modifying contentSlide15

Security issues

Shouldn’t we be worried about vandals? Our security model matches the original noticeboardsIf you can have physical access to a board

, you can edit it.Semi-public setting is not accessible to undergraduates or the publicOnline access handled by RavenSlide16

Early user experiencesSlide17

Notices of absenceSlide18

Funny comics are popularSlide19

People playfully decorate their NetBoardSlide20

Holiday photosSlide21

People have conversationsSlide22

Showcasing workSlide23

People become attached to their masterpiecesSlide24

What’s next?

Collect more data, and analyse itHow could we use proximity,

identity, or attention? We would love to deploy more NetBoards!Different types of users might use them in different waysSlide25

Conclusion

We deployed a collection of ten personal noticeboard displays

, and are collecting data on their useExamining the differences between digital and non-digital systemsPeople use them in surprising ways! What did we learn?Don’t let yourself be hindered by technologyLong-term deployment scenarios are challengingIt’s available online: github.com/errollw/smartboards2
