English Ivy is an invasive species that takes over your garden and kills your plants. It can kill full grown trees which can be disastrous for a forest or your yard.

To identify this plant, look for leaves kind-of like this

An invasive species is a species that is not in it’s natural habitat and is likely to take over the habitat that it is in currently.Slide3

English ivy is a native plant to England, Ireland, the Mediterranean and western Europe

English Ivy has now spread into the eastern and southern United States, also having probably traveled to America with immigrants from Europe in colonial times

English Ivy was first introduced into America in the early 1900’sSlide4

How To Get Rid of English Ivy

1. Using garden loppers or a chain saw if needed, remove the English ivy from the tree by cutting two rings from around the trunk of the tree. Cut the rings at your shoulder height and at your knee height. Try to not damage the bark. Then, strip away all of the vines growing in between the rings that you have cut. Be aware of any small vines that may have gone underneath the bark, as they can feed the upper part of the vine. English ivy vines when grown over one another tend to fuse together. This is how mats are formed and that is one way that a tiny piece of vine can provide food for

everything growing above it.Slide5

2. Cut into the mats of Ivy and pull it up. The roots are shallow, so this method works. Around the tree, cut a 6-foot radius and clear all of the ivy at the base of the tree. The ivy begins to grow away from the tree, instead of growing toward it. It's important to take away all of the ivy, roots and vines. Revisit the area regularly to be sure that nothing survives.( How to get rid of English ivy Continued )Slide6
