What is a main clause?

A main clause makes sense on it’s own.

The explorers had found the location. A main clause

Where would the colon go?

There was no one around playtime had finished.

It was nearly time to go I didn’t want to be late.

There was a terrible smashing sound the light was broken.

Using a colon

A colon needs to go at the end of the first main clause.

The second sentence doesn’t need a capital letter.

The second sentence must be a main clause.

It can sometimes be used to replace the word ‘because’ in a sentence.

The sentences must be about the same topic.
