This is a retrospective cross-sectional study based on weekly routine collection of hospital records of VLBW babies admitted to CMJAH in South Africa between 2013 and 2018 (n = 2,333). Data was extracted from a standardized VLBW database administered by the unit which is used for registering all VLBW neonates who are born and/or admitted within the first 28 days (neonatal period) of life. Data analysis was done using statistical software for data management and analysis (STATA 15.0). A diagnosis of NEC was made based on clinical and radiological evidence of stage II or III, according to Bell’s criteria. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the significant risk factor associated with NEC..
