Necrotising Enterocolitis: Transcript
An Overview Definition of NEC Necrotising enterocolitis is an acquired condition seen in neonates that is characterised by bowel inflammation and necrosis and translocation of gasforming bacteria into the bowel wall The bowel injury can range from mucosal alone to full thickness necrosis and perforation It can be present in an isolated area of both the small and large bowel or affect large segments of bowel or even the entire intestine NEC . Introduction. The major factor of morbidity and mortality in the neonate is the degree to which the organ systems have not yet developed.. The earlier in gestation that birth occurs, the higher the degree of morbidity and mortality.. rad240 pathology. G I T Pathology . continuation. OSMOTIC DIARRHEA. Disaccharidase deficiencies. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study based on weekly routine collection of hospital records of VLBW babies admitted to CMJAH in South Africa between 2013 and 2018 (n = 2,333). Data was extracted from a standardized VLBW database administered by the unit which is used for registering all VLBW neonates who are born and/or admitted within the first 28 days (neonatal period) of life. Data analysis was done using statistical software for data management and analysis (STATA 15.0). A diagnosis of NEC was made based on clinical and radiological evidence of stage II or III, according to Bell’s criteria. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the significant risk factor associated with NEC..
