The book examines the impact technology has on workers and the implications for employee selection, training, performance appraisal, and job design. This book brings together three great motifs of the network society the seeking and using of information by individuals and groups the creation and application of knowledge in organizations and the fundamental transformation of these activities as they are enacted on the Internet and the World Wide Web. Of the three the study of how individuals and groups seek information probably has the longest history beginning with the early quotinformation needs and usesquot studies soon after the Second World War. The study of organizations as knowledge-based social systems is much more recent and really gained momentum only within the last decade or so. The study of the World Wide Web as information and communication media is younger still but has generated tremendous excitement partly because it has the potential to reconfigure the ways in which people seek information and use knowledge and partly because it offers new methods of analyzing and measuring how in fact such information and knowledge work gets done. As research endeavors these streams overlap and share conceptual constructs perspectives and methods of analysis. Although these overlaps and shared concerns are sometimes apparent in the published research there have been few attempts to connect these ideas explicitly and identify cross-disciplinary themes. This book is an attempt to fill this void. The three authors of this book possess contrasting backgrounds and thus adopt complementary vantage points to observe information seeking and knowledge work. Computer supported work is increasingly being done out of the traditional office environment for example whilst travelling or at home and there is a growing need to support the cooperative aspects of such work. Remote Cooperation looks at ways of improving the available communications through the use of packet radio and compression techniques in order to reduce the imbalance between office-based and mobile workers. It also assesses how the effectiveness of the existing communications infrastructure can be improved by providing cooperative applications which fit within its limitations. Broadly divided into five sections - social and economic context application domains software technology and infrastructure communications technology and infrastructure working and learning from home - this volume contains contributions from both the research community and industry. There is a growing body of interesting research exploring the social shaping of mobile phones covering a wide range of topics from new forms of communication to the changes in time organization the uses of public places the display of emotions and the formation and sustaining of communities. This book evaluates the launch and adoption of mobile phones drawing out lessons for the future. In particular it explores how social scientists can collaborate with designers and engineers in the development of new devices and uses. It will interest people from both industry and academia. Those working in the mobile communications industry in strategy design and marketing will find this book of particular interest. In academia undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers in a wide range of social science fields will find it a useful reference sociologists economists psychologists in areas such as Science and Technology studies Cultural studies and New Media studies. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 9th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management IC3K 2017 held in Funchal Madeira Portugal in November 2017.The 19 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 157 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on knowledge discovery and information retrieval knowledge engineering and ontology development and knowledge management and information sharing.
