2. NORTH CAROLINAIn 2020, over 9 North Carolinians died each day from drug overdose.

3. SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER According to DSM-5, a substance use disorder (SUD) involves patterns of symptoms caused by using a substance that an individual continues taking despite its negative effects. Based on decades of research, DSM-5 points out 11 criteria that can arise from substance misuse. These criteria fall under four basic categories — impaired control, physical dependence, social problems and risky use:(APA, 2017)

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT)“A treatment originally developed for the treatment of suicidal behaviors and since expanded to treatment of borderline personality disorder and other severe and complex mental disorders, particularly those that involve serious emotion dysregulation.” (Axelrod, 2018)(Linehan, 2018)

7. What does Dialectical mean? Marsha Linehan, the creator of DBT, defines dialectical as a synthesis or integration of opposites. In simpler terms, dialectical means two opposing things being true at once.(Linehan, 2018)
