Author’s Purpose There are 3 purposes: To PERSUADE To INFORM To ENTERTAIN

To PERSUADE Includes: A statement of opinion Appeals to emotion Supporting evidence A call to action

To INFORM Includes: Facts and statistics Steps in a process Diagrams or illustrations Explanations

To ENTERTAIN Includes: Suspenseful or exciting situations Humorous or fascinating details Intriguing characters

To INFORM Types of texts: Encyclopedia Magazine articles Documentaries Instruction manuals Warranties Websites

To ENTERTAIN Types of texts: Short stories Novels Plays Humorous essays Movies

What is the Author’s Purpose?

1. Recess is definitely too short. In order to do better in regular classes, there should be at least one hour recess twice a day. 2. Toads and frogs are amphibians. Missouri has 25 species and subspecies (or geographic races) of toads and frogs. 3. Once upon a time, there lived a crazy teacher. She never assigned homework and had field trips every day. Magazine Scavenger Hunt Using the magazines provided, work with your groups to find 2 examples for each of the purposes Persuade Inform Entertain You will need to share with the rest of the group!

5 December 2017 Warm-Up If you could invent anything, what would it be, and why?

Invention First, you have to INFORM your reader. Write ONE paragraph providing your reader with information about your invention. Think of size, color, shape, uses, where it can be found, etc.

Invention Next, you have to PERSUADE your reader. Write ONE paragraph persuading your reader to purchase your invention. Think of what makes yours better than others! Convince me to want to purchase your invention.

Invention Last, you have to ENTERTAIN your reader. Create a picture/image with color that is entertaining. Catch the eye of your reader and make him or her laugh, cry, etc.

Invention Project Requirements INFORM: 1 paragraph informing your reader about the product by including facts and data PERSUADE: 1 paragraph persuading your reader to buy the product by showing why it is better than others ENTERTAIN: 1 advertisement (color and image are necessary) that makes it fun and exciting for your reader. Maybe you can even tell a story!
