Choking

More than 3,000 people die each year from choking

Occurs when there is a blockage in the airway

*Clutching the throat or 2 hands on their throat is the universal sign for choking

Abdominal Thrusts

Heimlich Maneuver

Force air through airway

3 Fingers down from bottom of sternum

Shock

Life threatening illness

When the circulatory system fails to deliver blood to vital tissues and organs

Have the person lie down

Loosen tight clothing

Keep person warm

Do Not give them anything to drink

Roll person on side if they vomit or bleed from the mouthSlide6

Severe Bleeding

Have person lie down

If possible raise injury above the heart

Use gloves (if possible)

Apply direct pressure to wound

If direct pressure fails, use pressure pointSlide7

A-Airway-Make sure airway is clear

Hand Position

3 fingers up from bottom of sternum

Place hands on top of the other

Interlock fingers

Heel of hand on sternum

Use heel to push sternum down and pump the heartSlide9

Chest Compressions and Rescue Breathing

Lean over victim

Press down firmly release

Lock elbows

Without pausing do 30 (15)

Give CPR until you see signs of circulation or until help arrives

Every 4 cycles or every few minutes check your ABC’s of CPRSlide10
