H

ow

to convince my colleagues that service learning is appropriate curriculum for higher

education.

Assessment

of

SL.

None

of them.

How

to communicate effectively the need for service learning. The difference between service learning and course requirements, the value of service learning. Hard to do when not valued.

None

, since service learning doesn't make sense for the type of courses I teach.

Community-based

scientific research with students applicable to my science-related discipline rather than the science of teaching and learning. (We get slighted here as scientists as the university puts so much emphasis on educational research, which pays very little and is often low or no impact by peer-reviewed journal standards).

How

to encourage students to take service-learning courses.

None.

What

is 'service learning' and how can it be used to benefit our workplace and not take away from our personal time or from getting our work done? I don't think its understood how busy our group is.

What

role does SL in the EKU's service region play in the EKU Mission and Strategic Plan, and how is it valued and how should it be

reported?

None

. But there is no field for it.

How

to get additional funds to facilitate SL projects/courses.Slide10

Hybrid: Online content to provide basic information and compare other schools approaches to the issues followed by 3 hours of face to face discussion of issues and opportunities.

Mix

of all the above (self pace, brown bag and seminar

).

None

, since service learning doesn't make sense for the type of courses I teach.

(

Fridays are usually good - give us a nice lunch, and I'd go).

Combination

of web-based and face to

face.

How

to survive in a hostile university environment that practices blatant

favoritism.

This

is too much professional development for this process. It shouldn't take more than an hour to go over the basics.Slide13

Is there transportation even available? From what I hear, its virtually impossible to get.

Transportation

(or the lack of) is a major issue and prevents us from allowing critical out of classroom opportunities for our students. For a University such as EKU to have such an insufficient fleet of vehicles available to faculty is very frustrating.

None

of the

above.

Mechanisms

for assuring student participation, supervision, &

preparation.

Don't

need

any.

N

applicable to

me.

Again

, how is SL support by EKU's mission and SP?

Equity

in salary. The faculty in my department who teach SL courses are grossly underpaid compared to newly-hired faculty who have no interest in teaching SL courses. I cannot afford to teach SL courses because of the time and monetary resources required. My chair wouldn't even cover lunch as a thank you for our community partner. It is a disgrace and an embarrassment to EKU and I want no part of it.

The

university vans are terrible. Enterprise has trouble keeping up with demand and EKU pays higher rates than others for the vans/transport. Where else can we/do we go?Slide16

recruiting events, press releases, advertising EKU to build our brand as a school committed to community engagement.

I

have no doubt that service learning is a great idea for some disciplines and courses, but it doesn't make sense for all. I'm not interested in any of the above.

Recognition

I

don't know that any would benefit

me.

Maybe

other types of scholarship would "count" for me, but they are not practiced in my department to my knowledge.

The

ability to use grant contract money in a way that benefits our project but we're unable to because of EKU restrictions.

Monthly

EKU Newsletter and dedicated EKU web space.

Again

, EKU wants more out of employees without compensating them.

I

do not need any type of showcase for this at this point in my career. I see this as a benefit to the student. Less so for me, but I am doing my job which is to provide students with meaningful learning opportunities.Slide21

Like I mentioned earlier that fact that EKU has insufficient transportation for faculty to allow critical out of classroom opportunities for students is really frustrating. Enterprise does not help either as they always seem to be out of vehicles (even though we supposedly have a contract with them). We need a much larger university fleet or better yet, Departmental vehicles like Campus Recreation has.

Finances

for respondents who chose “Other

.”

Neither community-based research or service learning will exist in a robust manner at EKU until it is integrated routinely into curriculum, RTP and merit (Does EKU still have merit?) the faculty needs strong and consistent leadership to make the case for service learning as a critical tool in higher education.

Again

, transportation can not be mentioned enough. It is by far one of the major roads blocks for faculty to allow service learning opportunities for our students.

Recognition

for promotion and tenure, with extra points given for research that fits definition of community engagement Extra points for teaching SL classes.

None

of them.

The

four/four teaching load is a substantial barrier to research productivity, in general.

Share

a portion of research

in-directs

with the faculty member as a reward for doing the grant writing. Schools that do this work well do it with grant dollars. Take care of your faculty who are grant writers and protect them and we will see magical things happen. *Make it easier to help or pay community partners too. (their time is money too).

Funding

for the

project.

If

this is part of our mission, it should be a condition of employment!

Have

it tied to Tenure and

Promotion.

All

of these would be great, but the time it takes to this stuff is sometimes a LOT. If it is during a normal semester, give reassigned time. If outside of normal semester, provide funds (so I

don't

have to teach or find a summer job).Slide56
