3 Million people lived in England during this period

London was built on the Thames river and was an important trade city and well as the countries capital.
It was a meeting place for Merchants, the court and where young writers, poets, and playwrights went in search of rich patrons.
London grew very rapidly and the city was not well planned as a result.
Very
crowded with narrow
streets
Poor sewer system

England from 1558 - 1616
The city was over polluted, no sewer, all garbage and human waste in gutter, and over crowded.
The
rat population, which carried the disease, was out of control because cats were thought to be evil and many of the dogs had been killed by the poor for food.
1592 and again in 1593 the bubonic or “black” plague struck London.
The only action taken to control the plague was a ban on public gatherings like plays, bear
baitings
, and sporting events.
This took a heavy toll on theater companies like the one Shakespeare owned and worked for.Slide5
