c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Gemini Boudrie And it is clear that Gemini Boudrie has designed an ePortfolio that doesn’t just allow others to see that which she has produced in the course of a fifteen-week Writing Programs class, but also—and, for Gemini Boudrie , this is paramount—allows that which she has produced to reach a greater audience, to elucidate that audience and, perhaps, even to inspire that audience. Fifteen weeks of work that has the potential, in turn, to effect a lifetime of change—that is what Gemini Boudrie’s ePortfolio chronicles. And that is what Gemini Boudrie wants most—because Gemini Boudrie cares, because Gemini Boudrie is here to make a difference. ENG 105 (Teacher: David Boyles)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Matthew DohertyWhen looking at Matthew’s portfolio, the reader is immediately struck by the clear, consistent, “on brand” visuals Matthew utilizes on each page. The visual design is crisp and very professional, in keeping with the tone of his English 302 portfolio. Each document included is a brilliant example of his writing throughout the semester. The use of the document gallery feature, the embedding of his presentation file, the clean visual appeal of the portfolio, and his professional “letter style” reflection show not just a student, but an emerging professional capable of making critical assessments of his work. ENG 302 (Teacher: Adelheid Thieme)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Alve DiazAlve Diaz masterfully demonstrates her ability to transition between rhetorical modes while maintaining a common theme. Her report highlighting prettylittlething’s Instagram use is clear and concise throughout with just enough flare exhibited by the images to create a masterful read. She lets her personality shine through with the use of creativity, including images and charts in her very detailed proposal about the fictional #trendyfit. Her presentation is bold, yet tasteful. Just as in the assignments, there is a common theme throughout the different tabs of the Digication portfolio, and she obviously took the extra time and energy to carefully package her work. ENG 302 (Teacher: Andrea Severson)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Alexis FullerosIn her course reflection, Alexis Fulleros identifies her strongest skills as creativity and attention to detail. These characteristics are evidenced in the entirety of her Digication portfolio. Not only is her creativity elucidated in the images and backgrounds she chooses for each section of her portfolio, but it is also highlighted in the topics, formatting, colors, and images she selects for her report and proposal assignments. Her attention to detail is evidenced by her thorough analysis of the way in which the company Gymshark uses Instagram, as well as by her proposal that another company, Two Krew , implement a similar marketing strategy. In each of her assignments, Fulleros chooses images that ideally represent the topic. Her writing is thoughtful and clear. These qualities are obviously a recipe for success. c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios EmmalynJonesEmmalyn’s ePortfolio exemplifies the gains from digitizing one’s work. She is able to seamlessly integrate multimedia, including captioned photos, art, and textual design to create cohesive digital arguments. Each writing project’s page is like stepping through a portal into a separate digital world with themed decisions that build and complement the text with full integration of writing into webpages. Assignments are not pdfs, but designed for a virtual audience with vibrant extra-textual support. Not only is Emmalyn able to showcase her writing, but the reader comes to know the author and her love of music through her clear wielding of voice. She details her struggle with the imperfectability of writing - spoiler: it is a love-hate relationship because, as she states, “writing drains me, as I put my entire soul into what I'm writing to produce the most fluid and compelling work that I can.” Many writers will relate! ENG 105 (Teacher: Elizabeth Hamm)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Alexis NortonAlexis Norton’s portfolio indicates the hard work that she has put into her ENG 101 course. In this portfolio, she not only talks about her experience in ENG 101, but also reflects on other courses she took along with this course. Using the affordances of Digication and her creativity, she has developed an engaging layout for presenting her work in ENG 101 and beyond. Alexis presents a unique perspective in each essay and successfully has the reader think about the social issues she writes about. For example, in her literacy essay, she challenges the common understanding of the word as a mere ability to read and write, and reflects on the social component of the term. She effectively shares her own journey of becoming literate over the years and what literacy means to her. In her second project, she provides an in-depth analysis of the controversial movement “# metoo .” She provides valuable personal insights into the phenomenon as well as supporting evidence. In her last essay, she reveals unnoticed aspects of the word “homeless” and indicates how being homeless can correlate with other issues such as mental illness. This portfolio is an exemplary work and shows the student’s progress in writing and reveals the importance of reflection in learning. ENG 101 (Teacher: Ekkarat Ruanglertsilp)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Linda PanLinda’s portfolio is fascinating to read. Her work is thoughtful and engaging, and her portfolio illustrates the complex rhetorical analysis work she completed in her Rhetorical Studies course. Her goal of becoming a lawyer and her passion for justice is evident throughout her portfolio and her writing samples. What is most impressive is her deeply thoughtful analysis of her work throughout the semester in her Portfolio Analysis document. Throughout the analysis you can see how Linda has assessed her work during the course and found use for it in her future goals as a lawyer. The ultimate goal for writing teachers is that students make connections between their coursework and their long- term professional goals, and those connections are clearly evident throughout Linda’s portfolio. ENG 472 (Teacher: Katherine Heenan)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Jorge Camilo Pinilla Patarroyo Jorge Camilo Pinilla Patarroyo, called Camilo, uses ENG 101 as a framework to explore his Colombian identity and his interest, through his choices of text and image. His brief introductory page establishes these crucial identity markers with a playful image of Patarroyo and his Design Fundamentals instructor. His short biography floats above images of old town Bogota, Camilo’s hometown. This mise - en -scene continues as we explore his writing samples. Camilo deftly moves through a description of being a “lost child” on an excursion to Parque Jaime Duque, a large Colombian amusement park which looms ominously in the essay’s visual accompaniment. Half-blocked by text, Netflix’s depiction of Pablo Escobar Gaviria scowls beside Camilo’s essay unpacking the show’s reductivist portrayal of drug-running. Black-and-white industrial design is juxtaposed next to an investigation into biomimicry, contrasting the Catedral Primada’s warm, well-worn architecture. Camilo’s portfolio demonstrates where he, and ENG 101, sit within the intersections of identity, writing, and design.ENG 101 (Teacher: Katie Alford)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Hanna PogueHanna Pogue’s ePortfolio is an excellent demonstration of how different modes of representation can work in harmony to engage her audience. On the “Welcome” and “About Me” pages, she neatly portrays herself, through bright colors and photos of herself, as an inspired, cheerful young woman of multiple cultural backgrounds. In the display of each project, she contextualizes her writing with a short reflection and related multimedia sources. Her writings reflect her deep understanding of the requirements of each assignment and thoughtful consideration of the rhetorical situation. There is a certain sense of humor in her language, which is accentuated by the delightful design of the pages. Particularly impressive is her inclusion of “fun things” and “me and my dogs,” which gives a special personal touch to the ePortfolio . Moreover, the use of color and font, the overall layout, and the embedded multimedia texts indicate her familiarity with and virtuosity of digital literacy and the use of technology. ENG 105 (Teacher: Thomas Bonfiglio)

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Valentina RiveraValentina’s ePortfolio is a perfect example of presenting one’s writing samples in an attractive and engaging manner. Whether it is the video of her favorite soccer team in the ‘About Me’ section, or the video of Donald Glover’s “Childish Gambino” in her cultural analysis writing project, her ePortfolio showcases her enriched understanding of multimodal writing. While her research project section provides a sneak peek at her engineering projects, it is her section on rhetorical analysis that deserves special attention on the part of the reader. Thus, her ePortfolio is more than a mere collection of her writing projects: It provides an insight into her trajectory of development as a critical thinker and writer. c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Charlotte SandyOne of the greatest joys—and there are many—to be found in Charlie Sandy’s ePortfolio is in being reminded that a genuine writer/artist like Charlie Sandy can perceive in any object, in any platform, its aesthetic possibilities. And from the very first page of this ePortfolio, Charlie Sandy opens our eyes to those possibilities, as well. Every page of this ePortfolio affords us an opportunity to see a true artist—a painter, a poet, an artisan of words—at work. We are allowed to see an artist who consistently employs the colors of her palette with the greatest of finesse; we are allowed to see a writer who employs her lexicon with an adroitness far beyond her years—and we are allowed to see the courage that is required to be the great writer, the great painter, the great artist. And it is being witness to that unwavering courage that will afford those who read Charlie Sandy’s ePortfolio their greatest joy. ENG 105 (Teacher: Thomas Bonfiglio )

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios RyanWaddingRyan Wadding’s ePortfolio showcases the work of an easy-going author as he romps through four different writing styles for different audiences. Whether Ryan is writing a service article, a trend essay, a profile of a local bar, or a narrative of heartbreak in Italy, his style is always like that of a friend sitting beside us chatting about things we want to know. Even though information can be pertinent and useful to us—helping us find reasonable parking, or a friendly campus bar and grill -- we feel he is talking to his readers personally. His final piece, a narrative about his heartbreak in Italy, turns out to be less about heartbreak and more about personal growth and maturity. It’s the story about Ryan deciding to study abroad with an ex-girlfriend. Yikes! But while recounting an emotional rollercoaster can fall into a trap of sentimentality, Ryan keeps the focus on honesty, growth, and learning. The maturity of the narrative teaches us to accept loss, while remaining open to new possibilities. ENG 475 (Teacher: Sarah Duerden )

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios EkkaratRuanglertsilpEkkarat’s Teaching First-Year Composition Portfolio exudes personality and fun, two things that we might not always associate with First-Year English but which align perfectly with his idea that “learning with joy” is at the heart of his teaching and this portfolio. The beautiful Thai prints on his “About Me” page establish the notion that here is an instructor who wants to share his culture, a notion reinforced by the engaging photographs of himself that he includes. Along with the three writing projects he uses in English 101, there is a thoughtful explanation of each assignment that conveys clearly Ekkarat’s personal interpretation of the goals of the project and what students will learn. These assignments are enhanced by a series of pop culture images that delight and intrigue us. Ekkarat’s personality is further revealed in his very personal and fascinating Teaching Philosophy. He explains that his passion for the English language began when he was introduced to an entertainment news anchor on the E! Network. That television show helped him understand his need to find his own approach to learning English, and it is clear from this portfolio that he uses that knowledge as a foundation for his own teaching. Pop culture images and detailed explanations combine to show us a joyful and dedicated teacher. Teaching Portfolio

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Andrea SeversonDr. Severson’s Teaching Portfolio exemplifies how best to communicate to our students who we are as professors and what we do. From the comforting images of coffee, roses, and macaroons on her homepage to an image from her time in Oxford and snapshots of her desk, Andrea’s portfolio welcomes students. She announces that she has designed this portfolio for current and prospective students, and each page fulfils that promise. Her articulate and thoughtful teaching philosophy emphasizes her role as a mentor, encouraging her students to see themselves as writers even if past experiences have led them to believe otherwise. Her gallery of syllabi reassures students that here is a teacher who is both creative and organized, and when they sign up with her, they will be in good hands. And if those same students explore her page devoted to research, they may well find themselves intrigued: Here is a professor who studies the ways that clothing influences our lives and what our clothing choices say about our individual personalities and society as a whole. Color, images, and a genuine welcome show us how a digital portfolio can give students a real sense of the generous and enthusiastic professor they will meet in the classroom. Teaching Portfolio

c elebrating writing in digital spaces A Showcase of ePortfolios Alexandra Comeaux The first image seen on Alexandra Comeaux’s ePortfolio is a stern-faced Donald Trump and the sentence: “Whether or not we like it, America is changing.” No kidding! There’s “fake news”, Brett Kavanaugh , Harvey Weinstein, protesters at the March for Our Lives rally. At the bottom of the page, she informs the reader: “…here’s the thing, we don’t have to ask for permission to create change of our own.” Being a change-maker! It’s a powerful message for first-year students to hear as they embark on their college careers. Alexandra sharply focuses on the world today as it envelops us with changes, some not for the better. Speaking out, finding their individual voice, exercising it, and taking action, these are tools she encourages her readers to use to make a difference. Her assignments ask readers to examine when and how they found their writing voice, what trends and changes capture their attention in today’s culture, and finally what action they can take to instigate the kind of change that they want. “What that change will be,” she says, “is entirely up to you.” Teaching Portfolio
