Church hymn examplesSlide3
Hymns are religious songs that usually praise god. They are usually sung in unison in the church by the entire congregation.
What is a hymn?Slide4
There are many specific forms of hymns, but the hymn in and of itself is not very restrictive. The thing that really makes a hymn is if the composer who writes it has “hymn” in mind. Most hymns though, are:
Sung in unison
Written with a specific
meter Have wordsPraise god and/or J

What makes a hymn a hymn?Slide5
Meter, is the beat and number of syllables in a song, and how they work together. An example of meter would be 86.86.86.
What is meter?Slide6
No. They tell us the meter of the song. Lets dissect these numbers. First, the fact that there are three groups of two numbers tell us that each verse has six lines. The actual numbers in the groups tell us how many syllables are in each line. The first line has Eight syllables, the second has Six syllables, the third Eight syllables, and so on and so on.
What the heck do those numbers do?! Just sit there?!Slide7

There are many forms of hymns. Carols, Doxologies, etc. Hymns are often seasonal, and sometimes praise specific saints, or other holy people.
Types of hymnsSlide9
Hymns are usually accompanied by various instruments. Among the most popular is the pipe organ, for this marvelous instrument can create the sounds of a host of instruments with lethal accuracy. It can make your soul feel as light as a feather, or it can grip your heart in terror. However, the pipe organ’s popularity is being slowly dragged back into the past, as are the old traditions. I do not understand this, because you do not need a brass ensemble to accompany your hymns if you have a pipe organ. In medieval times, hymns were often accompanied by a harp, or a lute.
InstrumentalAccompanimentSlide10
Hymns are often accompanied by a more experienced choir, that sings different melodies at the same time the hymn is being sung, for a different musical tone.

Hymns are musical pieces sung in church that unite a congregation in the praise of God. Hymn writing is dying out, and hymns are getting more modern, but some few composers will continue writing old traditional style hymns.
