Muslim Head Coverings
by Rochelle MarbleSlide2
In Islam women are told to dress modestly. This includes covering the entire body, except for the face and hands. However, some believe that this is not enough, which is why there are many types of headscarves worn in Saudi Arabia (
Hijab
Islamic Dress). Some cover the entire body, while others just cover the hair (
Hijab
Wikipedia).
They all have significance in Muslim society. All would be extreme to us, but
Saudi Arabian extremists
believe that not even the
burqa
is enough (Hijab Islamic Dress).Slide3
The Hijab is a veil that covers the hair and neck.

The
Niqab
covers all but a woman’s eyes and is worn with a headscarf. It can also be worn with a separate eye veil. The
Burqa
is the most obscuring of the headscarves. It covers the entire body, leaving only a mesh covering to see through.

The Al-
Amira
is a tube-like scarf. It is worn with a close fitting cap.
Shaylas
are long rectangular scarves wrapped around the neck or pinned at the shoulders.

A
Khimar
is cape-like scarf that goes to just above the waist. The Chador is a full-body shawl that is usually worn with a headscarf.

Women
are not the only ones required to dress modestly in Islam. Men are also expected to dress to a certain standard
. For men this means being covered from the navel to the knee (
Hijab
Islamic Dress).
Both men and women are not just taught to cover certain parts of the body. Modesty also requires that the clothing be loose fitting and look respectable. This means that they are not supposed to dress in rags, but they are also not supposed to be flashy (Hijab Islamic Dress). Muslim ideas of modesty also include speech, behavior, and should reflect all of their beliefs (
