Scripture in the LiturgySlide2

Scripture in the Liturgy

Liturgy is the public worship of God offered by the people of God – The Church.

The Scriptures came to be accepted as the Word of God, through their use in the liturgical celebrations of the community.

For this reason, it makes no sense to separate the Word of God from the worship offered by the community today.

The liturgy is celebrated in 2 main forms:

The Mass

The Liturgy of the Hours

The Word of God forms the base of both types of liturgy because it proclaims Christ who is at its centre.Slide3

The Liturgy of the Hours is celebrated by the Church throughout the world.

It unites the Church in its worship of God.

It places Christ at the centre of each moment of the lives of its members.

It anticipates the coming of Christ in the Eucharist and his return at the end of time.Slide5

Dei Verbum 21

The

Church has always venerated the divine Scriptures just as she venerates the body of the Lord, since, especially in the sacred liturgy, she unceasingly receives and offers to the faithful the bread of life from the table both of God's word and of Christ's body. She has always maintained them, and continues to do so, together with sacred tradition, as the supreme rule of faith, since, as inspired by God and committed once and for all to writing, they impart the word of God Himself without change, and make the voice of the Holy Spirit resound in the words of the prophets and Apostles. How should we compare the divine scriptures and the body of the Lord?

What is the function of both for the Church?

What third element is added to Scripture and the body of the Lord to make the supreme rule of faith?
