Racism in the beauty industry
Slide2My Topic.
My chosen
topic is Racism in the beauty industry and how it is getting better as the years go on and how it effects people
because its something I'm heavily interested in and passionate about. I feel it is a problem that is slowly being sorted, but I wanted to properly look into how much it
actually effects people in everyday life and in what ways is it changing to be better than in the years before / if it was at all. Also what beauty and makeup company's are doing to widen their ranges and what new ones are being created that complement all skin tones.
Slide3What I'm creating.
For my
work I am creating a double page magazine spread for the magazine Vogue including
an interview with Tasha Disney who has struggled with racism in the past within and not within makeup and her views on the situation. I'm also going to conduct a photoshoot with her to feature in my double page spread to give my feature life and character.
For my radio piece I'm going to be doing a radio 1 news beat segment explaining the racism in beauty issue and including a very short discussion with some peoples opinions. Depending on the timing I may also include a short song at the end as that’s what radio 1 normally includes at the end of each newsbeat.
Slide4Run time / Copy length / Imagery
For my radio piece, I'm creating something for BBC radio 1 news beat, where as radio 1 newsbeat is normally around 15 minutes long I'm only going to do
around 5 minutes of that 15 minute
segment as they normally include 3 different story's but I'm only doing 1 of those 3.
For my Magazine piece, I'm going to be writing an interview ( Q&A ) for Vogue on my topic issue. I'm hoping for my article to be between 700 and 800 words long but also including a lot of photos from a photo shoot I'm going to be doing. I'm making my article slightly shorter than I could so that a lot can also be focused on the photography that ill be doing because I'm passionate about that
– that’s my imagery.

Slide7Conclusions from my research.
Whilst conducting my research I got a
much
better understanding of multiple makeup brands, new and old which have either had problems with race (not including enough shades / being racist) or done something about it such as making an extremely wide range of shades for all skin types (such as fenty beauty and illamasqua) , I also looked fully into many different scandals that have happened recently and in the past to do with racism and I learnt a lot about how they either handled or fixed it (including the Tarte concealers and the KKW concealers).
When it came to my magazine and radio station research,
I made sure I researched my chosen magazine and radio station fully finding out about how they work what there audience is like, legal
information and the history and what it’s like today,
so I know how they work and all the facts and figures about them.
For both of my mediums I did primary research by carrying out a survey on each finding out peoples opinions.
Slide8Production schedule.
