Brush Fire/Hand Tools Review

Skill parametersThe drill instructor will give a tool from the vehicle or station to the firefigher.Performance Expectation:The firefighter will safely check the tools edge, head, handle and guards. The firefighter will demonstrate the proper method to field sharpen and carry the tool safely.The Firefighter will explain or demonstrate proper use and application of the tools.Equipment:Various handtools from the apparatus, PPE, and maintenance tools

Firefighter checks to see if the handle is cracked, straight and smooth.

Firefighter checks tool head for tightness, wedges and rivets.

Firefighter checks cutting edges for sharpness and correct sharpening angle.

Firefighter demonstrates the unit protocol of identification for unusable tools.

Firefighter demonstrates proper field sharpening technique with appropriate PPE.

Wildland Hose Drill

Skill parametersThe drill instructor will give a the crew a scenario that requires deploying hose beyond the reach of initial attack lines for a brush fire.Performance Expectation:The utilizing the appliances and adapters available to them will deploy additional hose to reach a fire beyond the reach of their initial attack lines to include the use of wildland hose.Equipment:Various adapters, hose and appliances need to deploy an extended line to a brush fire, PPE, and tools

Firefighter deploys initial fire attack handlines

Determine

the appropriate adapters and appliances needed to reach the fire from the end of the initial attack line. Take necessary appliances and adapters as well as additional hose to deployment location.

Attach

additional hose and deploy to the fire location.

Charge the lines and flow water.

Discuss options with crew

for additional deployment options including progressive hose lays and other deployment methods common to brush fires.
