2

3

. What does “

Vexilla

regis

prodeunt

Inferni

4. Who is the “creature, whose beauty had once been so great?” Why is he ugly now?

5. Define “fortitude.” Does Dante have this quality? How do you know?

6.

In Canto 34, Dante describes Dis, or Lucifer. Draw a picture as best you can as to what you think he looks like based on the text description!

Label your drawing.

7. Who are the three worst betrayers, and why are they in the lowest level of hell? Who did they betray?

8. Does Dante’s character change much throughout the Cantos you have read? Would you classify him as a hero at the end, or an anti-hero still? Why?

9. Based on Cantos 1, 3, 5 and 34, what is Dante’s opinion of himself based on how he has portrayed himself in his poem? How do you know?
