At 3:00 am on New Year’s Day, 1863, four Confederate gunboats appeared, coming down the bay toward Galveston. Soon afterward, the Rebels also began a land attack. Confederate troops killed most of the Union forces in Galveston and also captured many Union ships. Union forces even blew up one of their own ships to prevent it from being captured by the Confederates.
