EMS Professionals are advanced-level providers of emergency care who are trained to care for patients in the field and while transporting patients to the hospital. They manage many emergencies including cardiac, respiratory, and trauma events. Paramedics conduct more extensive patient care than EMTs. They are licensed to administer medication, perform and interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs), perform endotracheal intubations, and use other complex biomedical equipment.23Slide24

The massage therapy program teaches students how to safely manipulate the soft tissues of the body including, muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage Therapy is a clinically-oriented healthcare option that helps alleviate the discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain conditions. 26Slide27

The medical assistant program prepares students for a job description that’s varied and broad. Medical assistants perform many job duties to keep the offices of doctors, medical centers, and clinics running smoothly. Depending on their employer’s needs, they may perform clerical, administrative, or clinical job duties, or all three. The Medical Laboratory Technology program prepares individuals to work in a medical laboratory under the supervision of a medical technologist or pathologist and/or other physicians. The nursing programs (PN and ADN) can be found in operating rooms, doctors' offices, intensive care, ambulatory care, and clinics. The RN and PN roles focus on individualized patient care and providing resources based on needs. In conjunction with patient care tasks, RNs usually serve in a supervisory role to licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and nursing assistants. Radiographers perform imaging examinations and accompanying responsibilities at the request of physicians qualified to prescribe and/or perform radiologic procedures. They utilize equipment emitting ionizing radiation to produce radiographic images of the internal structures of human anatomy. These radiographic images are utilized by the physician for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes 44Slide45

The respiratory therapist treats people with health care issues affecting the cardiopulmonary system such as asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, cardiovascular disorders, and trauma. In the hospital setting, the respiratory therapist provides care and life support to patients in the emergency room, intensive care units, general hospital areas, the pulmonary diagnostics laboratory and other specialty areas such as rehabilitation. They use high-tech equipment and the latest medical procedures to help patients and may be employed in non-hospital environments as well. 47Slide48

The surgical technologist assists physicians, anesthesiologists, and registered nurses in the care of patients during operations. Students learn to apply the principles of sterile technique required during operative procedures, the use of instruments and equipment, related surgical anatomy and pathology, wound classifications and healing, standard precautions, and extensive study of procedures from surgical sub-specialties and related areas. 50Slide51

WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM NOT SELECTED?Applicants not selected for a program seat will remain on the ranked list up until the final day of registration. If an applicant declines the program seat, the next ranked applicant will be notified. After the final day of registration, no additional applicants will be placed and those not seated will be required to resubmit the supplemental online application for the next semester. MGCCC Health Sciences program do not maintain a waiting list. 62Slide63

WHAT HAPPENS IF I REFUSE MY OFFICIAL ACCEPTANCE?Following the email notification, ranked applicants are given 48 hours (2 college business days) to respond to the email notification acknowledging acceptance of the program seat. Thereafter, if no response, the applicant forfeits the seat and program directors and coordinators have the authority to replace the current applicant with the next ranked applicant. 63Slide64

Following the official notice and appropriate response to program acceptance, additional expectations (according to program requirements) are to be completed. Criminal Background Checks ALL Health Science Students at MGCCC MUST: Comply with Mississippi Law and obtain a CBCObtain the CBC at a MGCCC Campus Police OfficeImportant Information Concerning CBCTo Obtain the CBC, first visit a MGCCC Business Office for payment Take payment receipt and college I.D. to a MGCCC Campus Police OfficeCampus Police completes fingerprinting process and provides a receipt of confirmationWithin 7 -10 days, students with “clear” results are to return to the same Campus Police Office to retrieve the official CBC results

Official results that are “disqualifying” or “non-clear” are not sent to the Campus Police office but to the student’s mailing address. “Clear” results are required for all programs
