The islands are formed from lava from volcanoes

There are 2 types of lava

A’a is rough and moves very slow

Pahoehoe

is smooth and moves fast

The Polynesians explorers set sail across the Pacific ocean to discover

Hawaii

They were expert navigators who could

use just the stars and the sun to

travel the ocean

They

used

patterns in the weather and watched the sea birds and animals to help them find land

They used large outrigger canoes to sail across the ocean

Settlers brought many plants - coconuts, banana, sugarcane, sweet potato, taro, and breadfruit.

They also brought many animals – dogs, chickens, pigs, and rats

Growing up in Hawaii

It never grew cold! We only wore shorts and t-shirts

When it rained there was almost always a rainbow

Lots of hiking

Went to the beach almost every weekend

We had to fly every where. No road trips possible.
