CARBON FOOTPRINT
Slide2Hey
You
!
Yes,yes you! When you open the book, do you know you leave a trace on the book? What kind of a trace is this? A fingerprint, A handprint, browse the traces; which one is for you? I have a lot of traces on the earth. I’m the GREEN DRAGON!
I fly with the
wind’s energy.
I get energy from the steams of hot waters from the underground.
It’s my biggest fun to watch the turning wheels with the powers of the rivers!
I wonder what
the
waters
under
the
ground
include
. I
like
finding
out
the
sources
of
natural
gases
too
much
.
Slide3Curiosity
is
the most beautiful way of learning and having fun… I usually get curious about something such as how I was born, who
I am. When I
get curious
I begin to ask questions about
the place I live in or the things around
us. In these
days
the
matter
that
I
get
curious
about
is
the
earth
’s
structure
.
Slide4We can say that the
earth
is composed of nested globes.
We can give the name of nucleus to heavy sphere, earth crust to Stone sphere, the part at the oceans and seas to water sphere the top layer which is covered atmosphere to air sphere.Atmosphere: The top of the earth is covered with gas clouds. Atmosphere separates us from the space.Earth’s Crust: This part consists of the rocks. Rocks are covered with soil and we live in this part.Mantle:
This place, which is called magma, is filled
with a similar melted
iron with a hot matter.Nucleus: There is a core in the middle of the world. Like a hard core of peach…
There is a core in the hard core of the peach. There is another nucleus hidden in the world’s nucleus like inside of the peach.
Slide5Air
sphere
, in other words the atmosphere is like a cabbage. It keeps the sun’s harmful rays and the Sun’s glow. So, it prevents overheating and freezing of the earth. There are gases which are needed for living. Exosphere:It’s the top
layer. When exosphere ends, outer space
begins.
Ionosphere: It’s very hot. Radio waves find a way in Ionosphere. Communication signals
happen here.Mesosphere: There is the ozone layer which prevents harmful rays coming
from the Sun.
Stratosphere
:
There
is no
water
vapour
.
There
are
no
climatic
events
.
There
is no
gravity.
Traposphere
:
It
has
gas
and
water
vapour
.
Climatic
events
happen
in
this
area
.
Slide6Do
you
know anything which is colourless, scentless, tasteless, , flows like water, streches like rubber
, compressible, enlargable
, can carry
and send the
things inside itself to another
place?
This
talented
thing
is
called
Atmosphere
is
a
mixture
of
mostly
gases
.
The
existence
of
our
p
lanet depends on the constant presence and the right amount of these gases .
Damp, argon, carbon dioxide, neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen, xenon %1
Some dust
A little smoke
Some chemical salt
Some micro-organisms
Oxygen, enables the occurence of fire and livings’ respıration.
Nitrogen, enables plants to be nourished.
Carbon dioxide, allows plants to breathe.
Damp, allows the precipitation to occur, the atmosphere to hold heat, prevents the heat escape out of space.
the
atmosphere
.
Slide7Atmosphere
,
determines
the climate of the regions.Well, what is climate? The observed temperature
for an extended
period of time,
humidity, air pressure,
wind, weather events like precipitation
are collectively
called
as
climate
.
What
the
climate
will
be
like
depends
on
the
situation
of
that
place in the world, forms of the mountains, the distance
of that place to the sea. The climate is generally
the same in the
place where you
live. You can predict the
highest , the lowest temperature in summer
and winter months . But you must have heard that in recent years ,
the climate has been changing everywhere . Do you know
what the climate change means?
Slide8Atmosphere
absorbs
the heat and the harmful rays of the sun, keeps the enough amount, protects
the Earth
reflecting
back the remaining.
Thus, the Earth is always as warm
as it should
be.
However
,
temperature
of
the
Earth
has
been
raising
regularly
,
especially
in
the
last
50
years
. This situation called global warming indicates that atmosphere is not doing a
good job.Atmosphere cannot reflect back the remaining of the
heat. Thus the
Earth is getting hotter.
Temperature is gradually rising just
like the greenhouse which we
build in order to cultivate fruit or vegetable in winter.
Slide9You
may
think that it’s a good thing that the Earth is a warm place or you do not feel
cold in
winter. But
, the ocean currents
change with the rise in temperature
. The polar
ice
caps
melt
quickly
.
In
consequence
of
that
,
the
amount
of
water
in
seas
and oceans increases. It rains much less in inland areas. This
condition causes drought, even desertification. Because of not being able to tolerate the drought, some plant
species perish. The
force of the wind which
results from the
raising of the warm air increases. As a
result of that, storms occur more frequently and severely.
Slide10Marsh
gases
, ozone and carbon gasses are the things that changing our world so fast
.Carbon
gasses come
out when coal, oil
and some fuels burn. They rise to
the
sky
with
the
smoke
coming
out
from
chimneys
,
cars
,
and
planes
.
They
pile up on the atmosphere and they make it thicker. Because of this thickness, atmosphere
cannot reflect more hazardous rays and the warmth from the sun.
So rays and warmth
stay in our world.
This is called “Global Warming”. And
the global warming causes global climatic changes
.World exists for millions of years, so what is the reason
which prevents atmosphere to do its task and what is
changing the climate?
Slide11Every
body
who lives in this world, leaves a trace in the world. Some traces
are big
. Like
Great Wall of China,
Egyption Pyramids, Eiffel Tower
.
Some
traces
are
impressive
like
Da
Vinci’s
“
Mona
Lisa
”
painting
or
Rodin’s
statue of “Thinking Man”.Some traces change
the world like the invention of electricity, telephone and car.
Some traces are
sorrowful like deforestation, atmosphere’s
changes, most kind of
animal’s waste, melt of glaciers.C
arbon gases, which change our world’s climate and occur as
a result of people’s activity , leave a sorrowful
trace. This trace is called “Carbon foot print
”.
Slide12You
wake
up and wash your face in the morning. Your mother makes tea, an ommelette
for breakfast
. You
wear your new
washed and pressed uniform. Your
school
bus
comes
and
you
go
to
school
.
Every
object
you
use
in
the
class is produced somewhere and they get to place where
you buy them by a vehicle. You see some fuels used in
order to warm
school. You turn on lights,
photocopy, watch something on computer
. You do all this things by
using electricity. Every activity in your daily routine effects atmosphere,
energy resources and environment. As a result of
these activities you also contribute to carbon gases
that emanate to the atmosphere.
Slide13YES
SOMETIMES NO The people of most countries have calculation of carbon footprints. To do this, read
the questions
Answer
yes, no or sometimes.
Do you prefer throwing the
trash
to
recycling
?
Do
you
use
electricity
and
electrical
stuff
very
often
?
Do you use charcoal ?Do you travel by plane ?If you do, are you going long distances ?Do
you have a car?If you do, do you drive it very often ?Do you travel long distances by
your car ?Do you consume
meat too much ?Do you eat
fruit and vegetables which are out of
season? Do you buy new clothes very often ?
Do you use packed products ?Do you buy electronic stuff (mobile phone, computer etc.) very often ?
Count your answers. the number of "YES" indicates that
your carbon footprint is big. If"SOMETIMES" is more
than other answers, by a little more attention, you can make your footprint smaller. If"NO" is more than other answers, it shows
your
carbon
footprint
is
small
which
means
you
are
an
environmentalist
.
Slide14The
world’s
climate has been changing very quickly for the last 50 years because of environmental pollution,
construction of new
factories,
increasing consumption of energy and
natural resources. Everybody can do something
to slow
down
this
exchange
and
decrease
the
carbon
release
.
We
can
decrease
our
house temperature by 2°CWe can turn
off the lamp which is unnecessaryWe can unplug the appliances in sleep mode.We
think it is more environmentally
friendly to get energy from wind, steam power, the sun, natural gas and rivers. For this
we can prefer a company which
produces energy with clean energy
resources.
Slide15While we are
doing
shopping, we must be careful about where the products are produced. Products coming from far countries release more carbon gases while they are being transported. We should eat fruits and vegetables that are grown in our country. It is better to transport in small distances. We must be careful about buying packed products less. While they are being produced, they cause carbon exhales and can
give harm
to environment.
Slide16We
must
use less fuel by making insulation. We must prefer public transportation instead of private cars.We must walk or ride a bike for short distances. We must plant saplings to reduce the emission of carbon gases.
We must
try to create less waste.
We must remind our family to buy devices which use energy efficiently.
Slide17Carbon footprint is not similar to our footprints on the sand.
A wave cannot erase these footprints.
We should try to decrease the carbon footprints and we should take precautions to destroy the carbon gas.It is important to learn more about this point, want to do something, start to do it and make common behaviors with your friends.Until we meet again, we expect you to work harder for the environment…
