9/25 Minoan & Mycenaean Civilization

How were the two civilizations we studied yesterday similar? How were they different?Slide3

Minoan

Civilization

Located on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea Slide4

EGYPT

Mesopotamia

Peloponnese Slide5

Minoan

Civilization

Located on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea

Success was based on trade, not war.

They had trade posts throughout the Mediterranean - including Egypt & Mesopotamia

We talked a lot about how geography or location affected Egypt and Mesopotamia, how do you think the location of Crete affected the Minoans?Slide6

Art in Knossos

Knossos was the capital city of the Minoan Empire

The palace housed rooms for the royal family, banquet halls, and working areas for artisans

The palace also had a number of

shrines

(

areas dedicated in honor of different gods & goddesses) & frescoes (

which are water color paintings done on wet plaster)Slide7

Frescoes

What does this image tell use about Minoan culture?Slide8

Religious Shrines

Crazy thing about Minoan culture is that ALL of the gods (well goddesses) we have found evidence of have been female.

What is the significance of this compared to other ancient civilizations?

What is this mother goddess holding?

Minoans also worshiped Bulls – have you ever heard of bulls in religion before? Slide9

Minoan Civilization Disappears

By 1400 BC something took out the Minoans, it could have been any of the following:

volcanic eruption

earthquake

invaders

What we do know is that a new civilization took their place, we call them the

Mycenaeans

Slide10

Mycenaean

Civilization

Conquered mainland Greece & Crete around 1400 BC & ruled until about 1200 BC

The

Mycenaeans

were also great sea traders.

They lived in separate city-states & were ruled by a warrior kingMost famous for their part in the Trojan War Slide11

Bell Work 9/26

Greek Dark Age – write this down

After the fall of Mycenaean Civilization around 1100 BCE Greece goes dark

Decreasing production of art & pottery

Agriculture collapses

People flee due to famine

Writing using Linear B vanishes The only records we really have from this era is a story, the first story, written down by a man named HomerSlide12

Homer’s the Iliad & the Odyssey

As we read try and identify 5 different things that this story tells us about the culture of Ancient Greece, write these in your note book under the bell workSlide13

Bell Work 9/29 – Start as soon as you have read what to do

Imagine that the class has been stranded on a deserted island. In the interest of survival everyone has decided to create a rulebook for the island.

You have 15 minutes to accomplish the following as a class.

Decide who will do the following – hunt and gather food, cook, make shelter, explore the rest of the island, and take care of the sick/injured

Create your first 5 rules.

Decide how you will determine if someone is guilty of breaking any rules

The punishment for breaking any rules

How rules will be made in the future.

You are hereSlide14

Reflect – Answer in your Notebook

How well did the class work together?

What would have made it go more smoothly?

What problems did the class run into?

Did you agree with all of the rules? Why or why not?

What did this experiment tell us ?Slide15

Types of Government

Monos

– Single

Oligos

– Few

Archy – Rule

Demos – PeopleArios- best (wealthiest)Kratos – Power

Tyrannos

usurper with

supreme power

Given that information, what do you think these types of government look like?

MonarchyOligarchyDemocracyAristocracyTyranny

Which of these best describes the type of government the class came up with?Slide16

Bell Work – Just for Review 10/2

Use your notes, your friends, and homework 4.2 to answer the following

Who were the Minoans? What were they like?

The Mycenaean's?

Who was Homer & what did he write?

What are the roots to these words?

DemocracyAristocracyTyrannyOligarchyMonarchySlide17

Greek

Geography

Greece is a mountain covered peninsula that juts into the Mediterranean Sea

How might this affect the development of ancient Greece as a civilization?Slide18

Types of government

Between 750BC &500 BC different governments evolve in Greece due to the Geography

Monarchy

Aristocracy

Oligarchy

DemocracySlide19

Monarchy stage 1

Hereditary Ruler – known as a monarch or King

Has authority over everyone in the kingdom

Made laws & acted as judges

Led the army

Had a group of wealthy advisors known as aristocratsSlide20

Aristocracy Stage 2

WEALTH=POWER

Wealthy group of people who advised the king

at first had no real power

began to insist kings be elected this leads to democracy, oligarchy & tyranny Slide21

Oligarchy

This is when a small group of wealthy advisors were able to over power or ‘buy’ the king.

Most of these men were aristocrats- they inherited land & resources from their parents

They lived comfortable lives while the poor suffered.

Advantages:

decisions are made relatively quickly brings wealth to the city statesDisadvantages:

most people remained poor

most of the poor were ignoredSlide22

Tyranny

Around 600 B.C people turn to powerful men who promised to change the government

These men took power by force, usually using the military

People didn’t have many rights, but it was better than being left out like they were with the oligarchy

Advantages: Led by a person who often tried to help the masses

Disadvantages: not many rights

Had to do whatever the Tyrant demandedSome tyrants were worse than the oligarchsSlide23

Warfare Shapes Greece

Since the people living in Monarchies, Oligarchies or Tyrannies did not have many rights – their last resort to get those rights was violence

New military technology increases the power of the middle class

Hoplite- a citizen/soldier who was armed with a spear, shied & sword

Phalanx- a formation of heavily armed foot soldiers that was 16 people wide & 16 people deep

required extensive training promoted a sense of unity among the citizensSlide24

Democracy

Around 500 B.C the people of Athens decide they would like to govern themselves

People have the power

Citizens are able to vote on laws, kings & public policies

Advantages: good amount of freedom

Everyone gets a say

Disadvantages: the mob ruled, minorities generally sufferSlide25

Things to Fix

Introductions- All you need to do in this section is introduce your topic. Talk about Greece or ancient civilizations in general. Talk about the effect they have had on us today. Point out the debate that is going on.

Thesis- NEEDS TO BE ONE SENTENCE THAT OUTLINES THE 3 REASONS YOU THINK ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER

don’t start to explain why, just state it, the why is for the paragraphs

Athens= the city

Athenian= the people or institutions from the city (Athenian Education)Sparta= the citySpartan= the people or institutions from the city (Sparta Military)Slide28

Government Evaluation Survey

Rank the four forms of government you learned about in your gallery walk in terms of effectiveness. 1 being the best, 4 being the worst.

In a paragraph response explain in detail why you ranked the governments the way you did. (

you need to provide reasoning for your answer! It is not enough to say “I ranked oligarchy as number one because it was the best” – You NEED to provide evidence for why you think it is the best. Slide29

DBQs: Things to fix for your final draft, due Friday

Keep a Formal Tone

Use proper grammar

Read it out loud!!!!

Cite your sources

Whenever

you use information you got from the documents you need to reference the document, quote the information & then explain what you quoted!

For example:

In document one it states “Athenian boys started their education at age 7”. This shows how serious they were about making good citizens, it also shows a good amount of sexism since girls weren’t allowed to attend.

Explain your points!!!

Its not enough to just make a statement, be sure to explain what that statement tells us about the society as a whole, so what if the Athenian government was democratic? What are the good or bad things about democracy?
