DSF DG JFD DefAc CDI CDIO Future Joint Operations Optimising Special Forces Developing a Transformational Proposition for Defence that offers choice in meeting the demands of an evolving future operating context JFC Proposition …. that is more than simply augmenting and accessorising what we currently do. … we will not shy from radical and innovative solutions “How in the future will we transform Defence, through Information Capabilities to restore UK military competitive edge?” 1

SDSR Outcome The WitIA vision underpins much of the change described in SDSR A positive outcome for Joint Enablers Comd JFC on SDSR Outcome ‘Future UK Defence will be of bigger scale, higher tempo and will address concurrency issues – all of which are reasons to be optimistic’ 2

C4ISR-specific SDSR Outcome and Implications Challenges Some constraint in the EP in the early years. Areas requiring further development Exploiting the EM spectrum Robotics and autonomy Persistent SA and Understanding Research prioritisation Relationships, partnership and burden sharing Information Operating Model 3

Developing the Single Information Environment ‘….a logical construct whereby assured information can pass unhindered from point of origin to point of need’ ENDS: This will be a force multiplier, improving mission effectiveness, enhancing cyber security, and reducing information capability complexity and costs. WAYS: SIE, as a logical construct, will be delivered through strategy, architecture, standards patterns that are used to shape the Defence information portfolio. MEANS: The SIE will encompass ICT services and end-user devices, suited to the point of need and tailored to national and coalition environments. ‘…will enable leaders at all levels to conduct world class decision-making on the basis of comprehensive understanding’ 4

So what ? Specific areas of assistance Get the best ‘bang for our buck’ out of the innovation seam’ Early engagement – shape, influence and optimise R&D Cultural challenges, people and the value of fresh ideas Testing, evaluation, experimentation and learning Optimising the approval and commercial processes Challenge preconceptions, concepts and doctrine Optimising the manpower resource Cyber awareness in the supply chain 5

Candidate ContentSupply - Single Information EnvironmentSingle Information Environment (SIE): ‘….a logical construct whereby assured information can pass unhindered from point of origin to point of need’, The SIE will incorporate a Single Intelligence Environment. This will be a force multiplier, improving mission effectiveness, enhancing cyber security, and reducing information capability complexity and costs. The SIE will encompass ICT services and end-user devices, suited to the point of need and tailored to national and coalition environments.SIE, as a logical construct, will be delivered through strategy, architecture, standards patterns that are used to shape the Defence information portfolio. 7

New Style of Information Technology (NSoIT) KEY CONCEPTS Single Information Environment Defence as a Platform Identification and Access Management Safeguarding The NSoIT project will replace the current XP Office software with Microsoft Office 365, introduce new ways of working and productivity via SharePoint and offer more flexibility and mobility in the way we work through cloud based computing Corporate Information Systems Operational Information SystemsApplicationsServicesInfrastructure 8
