EpithetsEpithets are descriptive terms or glorified nicknames that are repeated often with someone's name. Epithets are linked to the noun by long-established usage, rather than immediate context. One of the most common Homeric epithets is "rosy-fingered dawn" as a repetitive description of the time of day.

Another common one is the "wine-dark sea." Most epithets have to do with specific characters, to emphasize their most prominent features as people.Slide3

Some examples (*See other PPT)Penelope: circumspect, wise, clever, cautionAthena: bright eyed, grey eyed, promachos (of war/fighting phalanxes), virgin, Pallas, hope of soldiers, whose shield is thunder, daughter of Zeus

Odysseus: wise, clever, hotheaded, loved of Zeus/Athena, resourceful, much-enduring, much-pained, cunning, the great tacticianPoseidon: earth-shakerTelemachus: poised, thoughtfulCalypso: softly-braided, divinely-made, cunning, daughter of AtlasSlide4

Homeric SImilesHomeric simile, also called an epic simile is a detailed comparison in the form of a simile that is many lines in length. Example:“I drove my weight on it from above and bored it home like a shipwright bores his beam with a shipwright’s drill that men below, whipping the strap back and forth, whirl and the drill keeps twisting, never stopping –So we seized our stake with it fiery tip and bored it round and round in the giant’s eye

.”What is being compared?Slide5

Unit 1 Writing AssessmentAfter reading The Odyssey, write an essay that discusses Odysseus’ transformation as it relates to The Hero’s Journey and evaluates Odysseus’
