3. Inclusive education for everybodyStudents who are deaf or hard of hearing can face significant challenges in the classroom, including problems accessing the lesson content spoken by the teacher. This can lead to learning difficulties if the right support and interventions aren’t in place. Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) is committed to improving educational outcomes for the 4,000 students in Victoria who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), while supporting a more inclusive and engaging learning environment for the students, teachers, and others involved. VDEI is proud to announce the launch of our Automatic Captioning and Transcription initiative, available to all schools and institutions who support the education of deaf or hard of hearing students. Participation in this initiative will enhance our school's inclusive environment and will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to utilise this technology which will improve learning outcomes for all deaf and hard of hearing students across Victoria.
4. What is the Automatic Captioning and Transcription Software?This initiative provides automatic captioning and transcription hardware, software, and support to schools with deaf or hard of hearing students, provided free of charge* to participating schools, funded by VDEI.VDEI has partnered with Oncall Languages Services, the largest language services provider in Australia and a global leader in technology advancements in this area, to implement their CaptionConnect Live tool as our platform of choice for this initiative.Leveraging equipment that you may already use in your schools, CaptionConnect Live is an innovative, easy-to-use, and highly-accurate automatic captioning and transcription tool that will reduce learning barriers for students in the classroom. Now, everyone in the classroom can participate in conversations, learning and idea sharing to reach their full potential.

How does it work?The teacher's voice is automatically converted to text and displayed in real-time on the student’s device or on a screen at the front of the classClass timetables are preloaded into the easy-to-use Caption Connect toolThe teacher’s voice is captured live via a small microphone Once the class has finished, the teacher can log onto Caption Connect, edit captions and formatting, upload relevant attachments, and then save and publish the transcript to students as a helpful study resource
