Academic Resources at UND

Resources Available The resources to be shared with you are available to all UND students at no extra cost to the student. Some student services are: Academic Support Assistive technology Career Services Counseling Center One-Stop Student Services Writing Center

Academic Support Tutoring Drop-In group tutoring is available for students in a variety of subjects such as Math, Science, Languages, Acct./Econ., usually 100-200 level courses. Schedule is online. There is also online tutoring available through Smarthinking in Blackboard. Academic Coaching Students can visit with an Academic Coach individually to discuss some academic strategies that they are in need of in their academics. Such as Time Management, Study strategies, Test taking strategies, etc.

Tutoring Academic Support Drop-In Tutor schedule: http:// und.edu/student-affairs/academic-support/drop-in-tutor.cfm Math Learning Center – Witmer Hall 310 Math Active Learning Lab (MALL) The Math Emporium is a center for learning mathematics, staffed by faculty and students who share a strong commitment to education. For those preferring a traditional lecture from an instructor, there are optional Live Lectures in O’Kelly 32 Online tutoring: Smarthinking in Blackboard – Various subjects, but Math tutors are available 24/7

Assistive Technology Read & Write Read&Write is an easy-to-use, intuitive toolbar add-on for PCs and Macs that supports students with  reading, writing, studying, and research . Read&Write seamlessly integrates with Microsoft applications, PDFs, e-mail, the Internet, and other software. Read&Write is available at no cost to all UND students, faculty, and staff . HooNuit (formerly Atomic Learning) Hoonuit provides online training solutions that answer “How do I do that?” questions through an extensive library of short, easy-to-understand video tutorials. Assistive Technology Starfish Stay Informed, Stay Connected, Stay on Track Starfish  is a tool that provides an efficient way to quickly offer coordinated support to all students ensuring they receive the right type of assistance/intervention to keep them on track . http :// und.edu/academics/center-for-instructional-and-learning-technologies/tech-support/starfish.cfm

Career Services Get assistance with student employment, job searches, interviewing skills, networking techniques, and resume building. Take Focus2, an online skills, interest, and strengths survey to determine your major.

Counseling Center The UCC offers a variety of services to students, faculty and staff including: Short-term counseling (such as  group ,  individual , and  couples counseling ) Alcohol and other drug  counseling Career  counseling In addition to counseling, the UCC serves as a  training center  for future practitioners and offers  outreach services  to the campus community.

Writing Center The mission of the Writing Center is to serve as a resource on writing for the university community. We  help people as they seek to improve their writing by offering positive, constructive responses to their work in any genre or discipline and at any stage of the writing process. We believe that the development of writing abilities is a life-long process, and that writing is a skill and art that enables people to create and communicate ideas. Writing Center’s Mission

Student Scenarios/Conversations Mature student 40 years old. This student has been out of school for several years. The student expresses that they are enjoying their program, but is feeling overwhelmed. They are dealing with financial stresses at home. Applicable Resources - One-Stop – Financial issues Nontraditional Student Services – mature student Academic Support – Academic Coach

Scenario Student, 18 years of age, coming directly from high school. This student is struggling with the academics in the program; he feels that in two courses it is the fault of the professor because they are impossible to understand. He is enjoying his other courses but is struggling with them due to a personal situation. Applicable Resources – Counseling Center – personal situation Academic Support – Tutoring & Academic Coach

Scenario Student is not sure this is the program she wants to be in. She is in this program because her family told her she had to do something after high school. Her parents are paying for her education and will only continue to do so if she is able to maintain a 2.75 GPA. She is having a difficult time focusing during classes as she says she is spending a lot of time worrying about everything. Applicable Resources – Career Services – Success Coach Counseling Center – self talk, anxiety, mindset Academic Support – time management, motivation One-Spot – Financial options

Scenario Student is concerned with program choice. They are not enjoying their program as much as they thought they would. They go to all their classes, but they are having a difficult time staying on top of the work load. The student thinks there maybe two reasons for this, one is the uncertainty of being in the right program and two, the student is having trouble with classes as they seem to be falling behind because they do not understand what they are learning. Scenario Mature student, married with children, has returned to school. He has chosen a career very different from his previous work experiences. The student expresses that he is having difficulty with the level of maturity and lack of work ethic demonstrated by many of his classmates. He wants to be successful and is not happy with the fact that he has to be involved in group projects as he feels that the work load is not balanced on his previously mentioned concerns. Applicable Resources Career Services – Success Coach Nontraditional Student Services – working with younger students Advisor – advise on course selection from previous experience Professor – group work advice Academic Support – Academic Coach – group work strategies

Scenario It is the fourth week of the term and thus far, Sally has only attended about half of the class meetings. You would like to talk to her about it but when she does attend class she arrives just as you are starting, and promptly leaves before you can catch her. Applicable Resources Starfish – Professor can flag the student Academic Support – refer to visit in Starfish

Scenario It’s the third week of class, you’ve assigned one short paper, and two journal assignments based on class reading. It’s obvious in class that Steve has read the material and thought about it carefully. He asks insightful questions in class and refers to the text in class discussion. He has been in class every session. He has not, however, turned in any of the written assignments. You’ve mentioned to him that you’ve noted their omission and showed him the effect on his grade. He agrees to get them done. It’s the fifth week and there have been three more written assignments. Still Steve participates actively in class but so far has not turned anything in. Scenario Susan is in your class and has been doing fine, but begins to miss classes, fails to hand in assignments, and generally is falling behind. You approach Susan after class and set up a time to talk to her. During this conference, Susan says: “I’m feeling totally overwhelmed by everything. My job is taking more time than I expected. I’m behind in all my classes and I have a math exam next week. Besides that, I had a fight with my boyfriend and I’ve had to move out of my apartment and find another place, so I’ve been busy with moving my stuff. Now, on top of everything else, I have this chest cold—I feel terrible. I just don’t know where to start, or what to do next.
