February 1, 2016,
this DIY project was installed by a homeowner and supervised by a welding instructor and the aid of “METALRUSTGUARD”. This project was documented to determine how METALRUSTGUARD cut the labor in half and save time and most importantly money.
Metal PergolaSlide2
On November 2015, the
material
used to build this metal pergola was purchased from a service center in Los Angeles, CA. This 16 gauge mild steel square tubing was not treated with any rust preventative.
The metal tubes were lightly oiled directly from the mill.
The metal tubes were stored
outside in the city of Corona,
CA for 45 days.
We researched several products in the marketplace to prevent the metal from rusting. I found this product called “MetalRustGuard”.
It was easy to apply and affordable, but did the product live up to its claim.
You tell me… Slide3

Fig A - 10 days stored outside. The top piece was protected by METALRUSTGUARD and the bottom piece was not.
Fig B - 20 days stored outside. You can notice that both profiles have heavy rust built up on the surface.
Fig C - 30 days stored outside. The profile on the left has not been protected and the profile on the right was protected
by MetalRustGuard (MRG). Slide4
The following pictures can give you a real sense for how MRG works. I even welded over the MRG to ensure that the brackets would not rust.
As I welded over it, the wrap did not burst into flames or contaminate the weld pool.
Slide5
This picture shows the two profiles on the right that were not protected by MRG.
The picture shows the profile to the left was wrapped and protected by MRG.
You can clearly see how MRG provides protection for rust.
The task to remove the rust from those profiles took upwards
of
3 hours per profile.
