July 1947 the British Parliament passed Lord Louis Mountbatten Plan as the Indian Independence Act which was implemented on 15

August 1947.

PARTITION OF INDIA

: The plan proposed two dominions of India and Pakistan.

CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLIES

: There would be two Constituent Assemblies of the new Dominions to decide its Preamble and written Constitution separately. Constituent Assembly to act at Central Legislature.

PRINCELY STATES

: Rule of the Princely States would end and they would be free to decide to join either of the dominions or remain independent and enjoy Commonwealth status as desired by them.Slide2

GOVERNOR GENERAL

: Each dominion would have their own Governor General.

SECRETARY OF STATE

: Secretary of State to be abolished but the interests of the officers in service as functionaries to be safeguarded.

DIVISION OF ARMY AND ASSETS

: The two dominions were to divide the army and the assets and liabilities.

INDEPENDENCE

: As per the provisions of the Act Pakistan became independent on 14

th

August 1947 and India became independent on 15

th
