ClimatesSlide2

Vocabulary

Climate zone- an area that has similar average temperature and precipitation throughout.

Equator- an imaginary line that divides Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres

Latitude- a measure of how far north or south a place is from the equatorLongitude – a measure of how far east or west a place is from the prime meridianSlide3

Vocabulary Cont.

Elevation – the distance from sea level, above or below (Dead Sea is below sea level, while Mt. Everest is much above sea level)

Higher elevation means a location has a colder climate

Turn to page 149 in your book and follow the directions. Slide4

Vocabulary Cont.

Current – a consistently moving stream of water, can range between warm or cold (think of Finding

Nemo

) Slide5

Tropical Climate

Occurs near the equator

Florida is an example of a tropical climate (see Everglades)

The sun is overhead nearly the entire yearFind lush, diverse forests (palm trees, oak trees, bushes…)Amount of precipitation variesSlide6

Temperate Climate

Moderate (medium) temperatures

Usually have 4 distinct seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer)

Precipitation variesBetween tropical and polarExamples include Chicago or Seattle Slide7

Polar Climate

Furthest from the equator

Cold temperature year-round

Low precipitationExamples include Antarctica Slide8

Erosion and Deposition

Weathering – break down of rock by water, rain, and freezing

Erosion is the movement of rock by water, wind, gravity, or ice

Deposition is the resting position ofthe rock due to weathering or erosionSlide9

Weathering

Chemical weathering is the breakdown of rock by acid rain

Physical weathering is the breakdown of rock by precipitation, gravity, wind, or iceSlide10

Biomes – There are many!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIy0ZlyPPDgSlide11

Biomes - Desert

Desert – is dry and extreme temperatures, less than 50 cm per year of rainfall **FCAT**Slide12

Biomes - Tundra

Dry and cold form of a desertSlide13

Biomes - Swamps

Swamps – covered by fresh water, salt water, or both. Where the ground cannot soak up all of the runoff

Temperatures can become very hotSlide14

Biomes – Tropical Rain Forest

Warm and wet climates, covered by vegetation or plantsSlide15

Biome - Grassland

Temperate climate, with very few trees

Think of The Lion KingSlide16

Biome - Savanah

Similar to the grasslands, but with less humidity and precipitationSlide17

Review

Hail is formed by liquid in a cloud turning into a solid, and being pulled back into a cloud repeatedly. This causes the hail to become thicker based on the number of layers added. Think of a jawbreaker.

Warm air fronts, when on top of cold air fronts, can cause what type of weather? (page 131)

Know the altitudes of clouds, in layers (in order) on page 121. USE PROCESS OF ELIMINATION TO CHOOSE THE **BEST** ANSWER
