Classification and Identification

Opium is considered a narcotic, which is made from the white liquid of the poppy plant. Generally found as a block of brown or black looking tar powder.

However it can be purchased as a liquid or a solid.

It causes a physical dependence from usage.Opium is considered a depressant as it can:Lower heart and breathing rate, rendering you unconscious, or causing death because you can actually stop breathing.Derivatives include:HeroineMorphineOxytocinStays in the body up to 48 hours after you’ve used opium or its derivatives.Slide4

Opium Paraphernalia

Because it was so popular to smoke in the 1800’s and the 1900’s, especially in China and the United States, the Chinese actually made a large portion of the used paraphernalia.

Opium Pipes-Usually made from bamboo and brass, would have tiny bowls on them to load the opium in.

Opium Bowls-either ceramic or bambooOpium cans-these would be filled with the components to smoke opium, including paper and the opium itself.Opium Lamps-These would have little protective cages and chains on them.Opium Pill/Pellet Rollers-Opium paste would have to be applied to a pill/pellet before someone could actually smoke it.
