How Firm a Foundation

Slide6

How firm a foundation

Ye saints of the Lord

Is laid for your faith

In His excellent

Word

Slide7

What more can He say

Than to you He hath said

To you who for refuge

To Jesus have fled

Slide8

Fear not I am with thee

O be not dismayed

For I am thy God

And will still give thee aid

Slide9

I’ll strengthen thee help thee

And cause thee to stand

Upheld by my righteous

Omnipotent hand

Slide10

When through fiery trials

Thy pathway shall lie

My grace all sufficient

Shall be thy supply

Slide11

The flame shall not hurt thee

I only design

Thy dross to consume

And thy gold to refine

Slide12

The soul that on Jesus

Hath leaned for repose

I will not I will not

Desert to his foes

Slide13

That soul though all hell

Should endeavor to shake

I’ll never no never

No never forsake

Slide14

I Am Thine

O Lord

Slide15

I am

Thine

O Lord

I have heard Thy voice

And it told Thy love to me

But I long to rise

In the arms of faith

And be closer drawn to Thee

Slide16

Draw me nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To the cross

Where Thou hast died

Draw me nearer nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To Thy precious bleeding side

Slide17

Consecrate me now

To Thy service Lord

By the power of grace divine

Let my soul look up

With a steadfast hope

And my will be lost in

Thine

Slide18

Draw me nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To the cross

Where Thou hast died

Draw me nearer nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To Thy precious bleeding side

Slide19

Oh the pure delight

Of a single hour

That before

Thy

Throne I spend

When

I kneel in prayer

And with Thee my God

I commune

as

Friend with friend

Slide20

Draw me nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To the cross

Where Thou hast died

Draw me nearer

nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To Thy precious bleeding side

Slide21

There are depths of love

That I cannot know

Till I cross the narrow sea

There are heights of joy

That I may not reach

Till I rest in peace with Thee

Slide22

Draw me nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To the cross

Where Thou hast died

Draw me nearer nearer

Nearer blessed Lord

To Thy precious bleeding side

Colossians 1:21–23 (NASB)

21

And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,

22

yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—

Slide28

Colossians 1:21–23 (NASB)

23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.

Slide29

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

In these verses, Paul shows us that because Christ is Lord of the church, He must be Lord of the Christian, and our lives should reflect His Lordship.

Slide30

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

Jesus is not something we add to our lives; He is our life – He is the founder and finisher of our faith, and we must reject every attempt to dethrone Him in our lives and in the church.

Slide31

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

To withstand the world’s attempts to undermine our new identity in Christ: 1) we must remember who we were prior to trusting Christ, 2) we must remember the purpose of Christ’s reconciliation, and 3) we must persevere in the faith which is in accordance with the unchanging hope of the gospel.

Slide32

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

1. We must remember who we were prior to trusting Christ (21).

Slide33

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

Everyone who truly belongs to Christ comes to an understanding of who they were before Christ.

Slide34

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

alienated -

foreigner, not a citizen, to be shut out from one’s fellowship and intimacy

Slide35

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

hostile

in mind

(22) – meaning our entire mindset was contrary to God which led us to live in open rebellion toward Him as demonstrated

in evil deeds

.

Slide36

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

“Scriptures present humanity, in our fallen state, as hostile to God and in need of reconciliation.”

-Douglas Moo

Slide37

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

(

Eph

2:13)

Slide38

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

“Paul reminds the Colossians of the great change that has occurred in their lives, in order that this reminder may cause them to dread the very suggestion of returning to their former manner of life” (

Hendricksen

, 83).

Slide39

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

2. We must remember the purpose of God’s reconciliation (22b).

Slide40

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

Christ did not just rescue us from death; He is delivering us over to an entirely new way of life.

Slide41

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

(Rev 21:1)

Slide42

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

holy

(22) - cleansed from all sin and separated entirely to God, His service, and His people

Slide43

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

Can your coworkers or your children or grandchildren tell that what you are living for is radically different from what the world is living for?

Slide44

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

blameless

(22) - without any blemish at all

Slide45

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

What sins are you tolerating in your life that Christ was crucified to cancel?

Slide46

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

beyond reproach

(22) - a legal term meaning free from accusation

Slide47

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

We will either be the ready bride, or it will be found that we never were a part of Christ’s bride.

Slide48

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life

(Romans 5:10)

Slide49

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

3. We must persevere in the faith which is in accord with the unchanging hope of the gospel (23).

Slide50

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

Perseverance in the faith is proof of saving faith. Vindication on the last day comes to those who do not abandon the faith in this day.

Slide51

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

continue

– to abide, remain, or tarry. For

the faith

to be the ongoing essence of your life

Slide52

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

When the Holy Spirit transforms us in the hearing of the gospel, God once-and-for-all establishes us in the faith and gives us the ability to be steadfast or immovable in a world that wants to move us away from the hope of the gospel.

Slide53

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

“Paul wants the Colossians to understand the gospel is the one, universal answer to the quest for spiritual fulfillment.”

(Moo, 147)

Slide54

Christ is Enough for Purity & Perseverance

Real saving faith in Christ continues to take our imperfections to the all-perfect Christ and to ask for His purifying power to change us. Real saving faith in Christ really expresses itself in an ongoing recognition of one’s daily need for Christ.

Slide86

Before the Throne of God

Slide87

Before the throne of God above

I have a strong and perfect plea

A great High Priest whose name is love

Who ever lives and pleads for me

My

name is graven on His hands

My name is written on His heart

I know that while in

heav’n

He stands

No tongue can bid me thence depart

No tongue can bid me thence depart

Slide88

When Satan tempts me to despair

And tells me of the guilt within

Upward I look and see Him there

Who made an end of all my sin

Because

the sinless Savior died

My sinful soul is counted free

For God the Just is satisfied

To look on Him and pardon me

To look on Him and pardon me

Slide89

Behold Him there the risen Lamb

My perfect spotless Righteousness

The great unchangeable I AM

The King of glory and of grace

One

with

Himself

I cannot die

My soul is purchased by His blood

My life is hid with Christ on high

With Christ my Savior and my God

With Christ my Savior and my God

Slide90

I bow before the cross of Christ

And marvel at this love divine

God's perfect Son was sacrificed

To make me righteous in God's eyes

This

river's depths I cannot know

But I can glory in its flood

The Lord Most High has bowed down low

And poured on me His glorious love

And poured on me His glorious love

Slide91

The Stand

.

Slide92

You stood before creation

Eternity in Your hand

You spoke the earth into motion

My soul now to stand

Slide93

You stood before my failure

And carried the cross

For my shame

My sin weighed

Upon Your shoulders

My soul now to stand

Slide94

So what can I say

And what can I do

But offer this heart O God

Completely to You

Slide95

So I'll stand

With arms high and heart abandoned

In awe of the One

Who gave it all

Slide96

I'll stand

My soul Lord to You surrendered

All I am is Yours

Slide97

So I'll stand

With arms high and heart abandoned

In awe of the One

Who gave it all

Slide98

I'll stand

My soul Lord to You surrendered

All I am is Yours

Slide99

So I'll walk upon salvation

Your Spirit alive in me

My life to declare Your promise

My soul now to stand

Slide100

So what can I say

And what can I do

But offer this heart O God

Completely to You

Slide101

So I'll stand

With arms high and heart abandoned

In awe of the One

Who gave it all

Slide102

I'll stand

My soul Lord to You surrendered

All I am is Yours

My faith it is an oaken staff

The traveler’s well loved aid

My faith it is a weapon stout

The soldier’s trusted blade

Slide106

I’ll travel on and still be stirred by

prayerful thought or holy Word

By all my perils undeterred

A soldier-pilgrim staid

Slide107

I have a Guide and in His steps

When travelers lone have trod

If there beneath was flinty rock

Or yielding grassy sod

Slide108

They cared not but with force unspent

Unmoved by pain they onward went

Unstayed

by pleasures still they bent

Their zealous course to God

Slide109

My faith it is an oaken staff

O let me on it lean

My faith it is a trusty sword

May falsehood find it keen

Slide110

Thy Spirit Lord to me impart

O make me what Thou ever art

O patient and courageous heart

As all true saints have been
