Sylvia Plath. Pg. 177. Journals, April 1953. “‘If only something would happen!’ Something being the revelation that transfigures existence; works a miraculous presto-. chango. upon the mundane mortal world – turning the toads and cockroaches back into handsome fairy princes. "A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." . Definition of oxymoron = a combination of contradictory or incongruous words such as ‘soft rock’ or ‘cruel kindness.’. Example quotation of device from poem = “soft fists” from line 10.. Effect = when a poet uses an oxymoron it points out a contradictory idea which draws the reader’s attention. It suggests to the reader that they look closely. In this poem the “soft fists” remind the reader that, although mushrooms are soft, they have to be powerful and strong (as in “fists”) to push their way through hard earth overnight. Perhaps the reader has never before recognized the strength of a mushroom. . 6480/7480 | Studies . in Contemporary Literature: . Mad Men . and the Sixties. .  . Dr. David Lavery. Summer 2015.  .
