RECAP OF OUR LAST STUDY “Concern for believers’ spiritual growth”: Paul showed passion and concern for the spiritual stability and growth of his converts. From his example, we learn the need for personal sacrifice and consecration for the maturation and stability of new converts and the need to endure suffering while interceding for others. Persecution is are inevitable. Satan is the chief agent.The focus of Paul’s prayers and labour was the perfection of believers. Our intercession for other believers is true evidence we are genuinely concerned for their spiritual welfare.

TODAY ’S STUDY:LESSON 776: CALL TO HOLINESSMEMORY VERSE: ……“For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness” (1 Thessalonians 4:7).TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12

INTRODUCTION After the first epistle to the church in Thessalonica, Paul found it necessary to instruct them again on the importance of holiness and living to please God. Thessalonica was notorious for immorality and idleness. Paul instructed believers not to conform to the immoral and idle lifestyles of those who did not know God. True holiness entails that we lead quiet lives, mind our business, work with our hands and not depend on others.QUESTION 1: In practical terms, what does the call to holiness mean to believers? – 1 Thes 4:3-7,11; 2 Thes 3:7,8,11

BELIEVERS’ CALL TO HOLINESS IN A POLLUTED SOCIETY 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; 1 Peter 1:14-16; Matthew 5:8The new converts had been taught and shown the basics of Christian living and how to obey the commandments of God. God’s will for sinners and backsliders is to repent and be saved lest they perish; for believers, it is that they should be sanctified. A sanctified believer is consecrated, cleansed and free from from all uncleanness. “For this is the will of God, even our sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication” (Thessalonians 4:3). At sanctification, we experience the removal of the adamic nature and receive the ability to love God and our neighbours.

QUESTION 2 : What is the will of God concerning sinners, backsliders and saints? – 1 Tim 2:3,4; 2 Pet 3:9; Eze 36:26; Heb 13:12QUESTION 3: How should believers respond to the changing moral standards in the world? – 1 Cor 6:9,10,18; Rom 1:28; 1 Thes 5:22BELIEVERS’ CALL TO HOLINESS IN A POLLUTED SOCIETY1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; 1 Peter 1:14-16; Matthew 5:8

CONTINUATION OF BROTHERLY LOVE AMONG SAINTS 1 Thessalonians 4:9,10; ; John 13:34,35Love is the hub around which all other virtues revolve. It is the hallmark of our Christian life and we are called to daily live in it. Our love should not only be limited to those in our immediate environment; we are to increase the influence of our love to reach the mission field where sinners are yearning for the true gospel. “…Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:39).QUESTION 4: Why is love so central in the Christian life and how can believers grow in it? – John 13:34,35; 1 Pet 4:8; 1 Thes 3:12

COMMAND TO PROFITABLE LABOUR AND SOBRIETY1 Thessalonians 4:11-12; 2 Thes 3:6-12; Acts 20:35Some people in the church were idle and wandered from house to house, gossiping and bearing tales. Paul instructed such to work with their own hands and be productive. He taught them by example how he worked as a tentmaker, so he would not to be burdensome to any. God’s design is that man should work to earn his living. When we are diligent in our work, we will not lack; our needs will be met.QUESTION 5: How can we help believers who are idle? – Gen 2:15; 2 Thessalonian 3:6-12;

CONCLUSION Believers are not to copy the immoral and idle lifestyles of those who do not know God. Holiness entails that we lead quiet lives, mind our business, work with our hands and not depend on others. Sinners and backsliders are to repent lest they perish. A sanctified believer is consecrated, cleansed and free from from all uncleanness. Believers are to love their neighbours as themselves. God’s design is that man should work to earn his living. When we are diligent, we will not lack, our needs will be met, and God will not be reproached.
