French Normandy architecture is based on homes built on the French countryside near Normandy, France.
History:
Architectural Style: French Normandy
The style borrows elements from the Tudor style including steeply pitched roofs, half timbered walls, and casement windows.
In America, Normandy homes are usually large and elegant estate style homes, but may also be built in a more cottage style as shown in the picture at left.
Because of the steeply pitched roof, even the smaller cottage style homes are often built with a ½ story second floor in the attic space.

B. The French Normandy home plan is usually asymmetrically
balanced.
Characteristics:
C. French Normandy homes are also characterized by having
dormers, with segmented dormers being most common.
G. The tower in a Normandy style home usually contains
the front entry to the home, however; it is not
uncommon for it to contain a spiraled staircase leading
to the second floor.
Architectural Style: French Normandy
French Normandy architecture’s most notable trademark is the large, centrally located round tower entry with a conical roof.
D. Veneers used in French Normandy architecture are varied.
Typically these include a combination of brick, stone, half- timber, stucco and cedar shakes.
F. Casement windows are opened by turning a hand crank. The windows are hinged on one side and open out like a door.E. Normandy homes usually contain arched top casement windows.
Segmented Dormers are dormers built with arched roofs as shown below.
