The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened on February

20, 1872,

located on 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City. John Taylor Johnston was the museums first president, and his personal art collection was the first to be showcased at the museum. George Palmer Putnam was its founding superintendent, artist Eastman Johnson was the co-founder of the museum, and Luigi Palma di Cesnola, who was once a Civil War officer, was the director until 1904. They established the museum which consisted of a Roman stone sarcophagus and 174 mostly European paintings. The collections, however, grew to the point where more space was needed.Slide3

American architects

Calvert Vaux and

Jacob Wrey Mould designed a red-brick and stone "mausoleum“ like concept for the building when expanding it. However, Vaux's building idea was dislike by the board; the building had a High Victorian Gothic style, which the president of the Met said the project/idea was "a mistake.“ 20 years later, a new architectural plan for the building went into action. Since then, buildings such as the Beaux-Arts Fifth Avenue facade, Great Hall, and Grand Stairway were added. Richard Morris Hunt was the designer of these additions,

but

his son, Richard Howland Hunt, finished them in 1902 after his death.Slide4

The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden is

on

the roof by the museum’s southwestern corner . The Garden, as well as it's cafe and bar, is a popular spot at the museum during mild-weathered months. On Friday and Saturday evenings, large crowds create long lines at the elevators. The Roof Garden has an excellent view of Central Park as well as the Manhattan skyline. The garden was the gift from philanthropists Iris and B. Gerald Cantor, founder and chairman of securities firm Cantor

Fitzgerald, and was

opened on August 1, 1987.Slide5

One of the

Met's

most well know collection is their collection of Greek and Roman art. This collection contains over 17,000 pieces. The Greek and Roman collection is one of the original halls from when the museum was first opened. The museum's first major center piece was a Roman sarcophagus, which is still currently on display. The collection is dedicated to Greek and Roman artifacts and is filled with items from ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. These cultural regions have a wide range

of artistic

styles, like Grecian black and red figure vases and

carved Roman tunic pins.Slide6

The

M

etropolitan Museum of Art seems like an amazing museum, and I would like to visit it. I enjoyed reading about the Greek and Roman wing of the Museum. I’ve studied Greek and Roman History and Mythology since I was rather young and it has always been an interest of mine. So seeing a whole hall dedicated to the history and mythology I love and have grown up with is really cool! I also like the actual architecture of the building. The structure is elegant with its Palace like/Gothic Victorian theme, and the roof garden adds an almost whimsical feel to it. I hope that I’ll be able to visit in the future.
