Human Value: Right Conduct
Virtue: Confidence
Wise Saying:
“Have faith in yourself, have faith in goodness. That is the secret of greatness.”Slide5
Questions:
This wise saying is about the Human Value of Right Conduct. The Virtue or sub-Value in this saying is ‘confidence.’
∞ Who can tell us
what the word ‘confidence’ means?∞ What does it mean to be ‘confident’?Slide6
Now let’s look at the saying.
Who would like to tell us, in your own words, what the saying means?
What does it mean to ‘have faith in yourself’?Slide7
Illustration:
When we were babies learning to roll over, then sit up, then crawl, stand, walk and then run, we had faith in ourselves. Deep within us we knew we could do this.
How can we reconnect with that level of faith once again?
We need to get rid of those habits which stop us from feeling confident. For example, banish laziness, never compare yourself with others…Now, let’s look at the second part of the saying, ‘have faith in goodness.’ In what ways can we ‘have faith in goodness’? (e.g. if we do good things then good things will happen to us at the right time, etc.)Slide8
Illustration:
There are many examples in Nature where we have faith in goodness. For example, we have faith that:
A new day will come after the darkest part of the night
After the tide has gone right out, it will start to come in againSlide9
It is the same in human affairs for we are a part of Nature too. Even during the worst moments, when everything seems terrible and wrong, we can have faith that ‘good will come of this.’Slide10
The wise saying tells us that if we ‘have faith in ourselves and faith in goodness’ then we have discovered ‘the secret of greatness.’
In what ways can a human being be ‘great’?
What is a ‘secret’?
In what way is having this faith a secret?...(example: very few people know that this is the way to become ‘great.’)Slide11
Why do we need both types of faith in order to know the ‘secret of greatness’?
What would happen to someone if they had faith in themselves but no faith in goodness? Could they become ‘great’? Why or why not?
What would happen if someone had ‘faith in goodness’ but did not have faith in themselves? Could they become ‘great’? Why or why not?
Imagine having both types of faith (in yourself and in goodness). How would your life change?Slide12
Guided ImaginationSlide13
Affirmation for Reflection and Contemplation:
“ I have faith in myself.”
“I have faith in goodness.”Slide14
Write an action plan for what you can do to develop these two types of faith in yourself:
∞What can you do in your daily
life to practice having faith in
your (S)self? ∞What can you do in your daily life to practice faith in goodness?Slide15
Closing Prayer
We thank the Divine, the Sacred, for allowing us to embark on this journey of self-transformation towards aligning ourselves in Right Conduct and Confidence with our smaller and higher (S)selves. In practicing faith in ourselves and faith in goodness, we honor the Greatness that we carry within, experience around us, and know has been gifted to us from the All.
