The Periodic Table Lay out

2-28-16 Take out periodic table basics and white paper You will need scissors, a glue stick, and colored pencils

Use an Analogy Calendar like the Periodic Table

Calendar Days of a calendar are like the periods of the Periodic Table The days are arranged in rows like the Periodic T able

The periods of the Periodic Table are arranged in rows. The elements in a row have the same number of energy levels.

The columns of a calendar are similar to groups on the periodic table

The groups on the periodic table have similar properties related to their structure.

Lewis Dot Diagram

Lewis Dot Diagrams Steps: 1. Write the element symbol 2. determine the number of valence electrons 3. use dots to represent the electrons and place them around the symbol clock wise IMPORTANT RULE: Lewis dot diagrams can only between 1-8 electrons they can NOT have 0 or more than 8***

Periodic table song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgVQKCcfwnU&t=29s

What is meant by this cartoon?

How well do you know the elements? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nGz7xgGJzc

Read the following. Circle important vocabulary words and underline their meaning from the reading. Then complete the chart below .

Give two other important pieces of information from the reading.

1 st uppercase; 2 nd lowercase 1869 – Dmitri Mendeleev

3-6-17 Take out your notes Pick up diagram dot challenge Homework finish dot challenge and periodic puns

GROUPS VERSUS PERIODS (CUT AND PASTE)

GROUPS VERSUS PERIODS (CUT AND PASTE)

Series Mass # increases slowly - Mass # goes up by a lot - Ex: Noble Gases Periods - Families - GroupsAtomic # increases by one Tells the # of shells - Tells the # of electrons in the outermost shell- Also known as column- Atomic # increases by more than one Also known as rows - Similar properties Ex: Li, N, Ne

Correct answers

Periodic Table Arrangement

The elements on the PT are arranged by increasing atomic number.

Color the ALKALI METALS TAN and label them. What column are they in? 1

Color the ALKALINE EARTH METALS YELLOW and label them. What column are they in? 2

Color the TRANSITION METALS PINK and label them. Why are they transition metals? B group elements – they have 1, 2, or 3 valence electrons .

Color the remaining METALS ORANGE and label them. Don’t forget the ACTINIDES AND LANTHANIDES.

Color the NOBLE GASES BLUE and label them. Why are they noble? Complete outer shell or valence shell .

Color the HALOGENS GREEN and label them. Why are they called halogens? 7 – Need 1 electron to be full .

Color the METALLOIDS PURPLE and label them. Why are they called metalloids? They have properties of both metals & nonmetals .

Color the remaining NONMETALS RED . *** DUPLICATE THIS COLOR CODING AND LABELING ON TO YOUR OWN PT***

Types of elements

Compare and Conclude

SIMILARITIES FOR METALS, NON METALS AND METALLOIDS   All elements Found on Periodic Table All have protons, electrons, and neutrons

UNIQUE TO NON METALS No metallic properties Take valence electrons Location, right of the staircase Negative (-) ions Mostly gases

UNIQUE TO METALLOIDS Properties of both metals and nonmetals Give or take Location, along the staircase (+) or (-) ions Solids or gases

WHAT DO YOU THINK TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE THREE MAIN TYPES OF ELEMENTS AND WHY?

Number of valence electrons because they drive how they react to get a full valence shell . What it will do to become full.

ELECTRON DOT DIAGRAMMING

WHAT ? (are they) A dot diagram shows number electrons in last shell (valence) . WHY ? (do you draw them) Show how the element will react . HOW ? (do you draw them)Look at the group number (column) it is equal to the number of dots .

Practice

WHEN ? (are they useful) In bonding .
